In 1986, It surpassed it's maximum flood control pool of 1044 ft. The elevation at the top of the dam is 1050.50. I guarantee they want to open the gates but downstream flooding will not allow them to do it. Keystone is 19 1/2 feet above normal pool due to inflow from the salt fork river and other creeks. Hopefully with a weather pattern change coming they will be able to start releasing water next week. It's been a lot of years since it was this high. It will take a long time to get the mess cleaned up after the fact. I will be really surprised if the campgrounds are open by July 4th.

Im pretty sure they will be fine, You never know though, seems like you put out several to get a really good one, so alot of work for sometimes not alot of return, We should start sinking some in the river after this Tim, thats where all Kaw crappie are headed! Well maybe the Keystone boys will be happy! LOL

Please explain to a catfisherman why all the crappie would move to the river?

We will lose a lot of fish through the dam when they eventually open the gates. Fishing can get really good below the dam.

I have a video on VHS of Kaw being about 6' below the roadway on the dam. I left my initials in spray paint under the Washunga bridge in the 90's. Had to drop the seats in the bass boat to get under there.
The COE denied that water was going over the top of the gates, but I have a video that says otherwise.
The walleye/saugeye took a huge hit. We were catching them on a regular basis in the main lake before that time. Haven't caught but one or two since then.

Hopefully the COE will let the water out on a graduated basis and not just try to dump the lake.

I could care less about the campers. I know that sounds rude, but campers come and go. Dumping the lake will have an effect on fish populations for years to come.
Quality fishing is what keeps people coming back.

I'm from Nebraska and wife and kids came down in March and fished. Kids asked how people put the names and stuff up under the bridge. Now we know:-). Can't imagine what it looks like down there. I hope things get back to normal soon and the fishery is in good shape.

Dennis our saving grace is keystone is up 29 ft also. They are releasing 30,000 cubic ft but still have 50,000 coming in. Luckily for us our inflow has dropped to 20,000 cfm's. I cannot see them opening up all the gates due to the downstream water levels. They probably won't let them open anything until Keystone starts dropping. Looks like we are gonna get a break from the rain for a week or so.
