I drag this stuff home on a Flatbed, nothing I buy is ever running. Then there's the Deal, it's got to be fantastic because you never know what you're really buying so it absolutely must be dirt cheap, I mean going to the wrecking yard cheap. Well you don't get to pick brand, color, model, etc as I never know what I'm going to run across, boats or autos. This car has been here for 3 years, broken more than fixed. It has been pushed in a corner more than once just like the Caddy. Thanks for noticing the work, it is starting to look good, hopefully it will run good for a while. I think with the tires I'm about $7,500 all in but if my labor counted for anything like my work does professionally it would be more like $15K. Double the book value. I would be upside down really bad. The up side is I keep these projects, running them for years, so cheap to insure and register. This car is about $35 to register but if new it would be $400 a year for the first 3 years here in Mississippi. The newer the car the higher the license plates are. At 25 years old I can buy a antique license plate (whats on the Caddy) after that you never have to register them again.

If Slab had started this "Personal Blog" section 3 years ago like Paul Harvey was fond of saying "Now you know the rest of the story" you would know just how rough this little car was when we rolled it off the Flatbed into the shop. For example, I thought it was Black instead of Blue, how bad the paint was.

Wowsers, $7500 in, wifey would kill me. But having said that I'm about half that into my jeep. And in the end, I only got a jeep. You got amg looking benz. Very nice. But I have to say it's fun to be able to tinker like this as I age.

Slab, all us older, aging men must have a reason to get up and go everyday. It is a blessing to us all to be interested in something mechanical as we don't need to do puzzles at that point. Our projects are the puzzles.

Exactly. Our projects are our puzzles. Yeah rebuilding auto transmission is one for sure, and figuring out electrical gremlins too, for sure. All of it. Fun stuff. And rewarding when something is solved.

Default Found a Crack in the Radiator Tank J-B to the Rescue

I have been loosing just a little coolant for a while now. I replaced the Radiator Upper Hose O-Ring a week or so ago but it did not fix. While working on restoring the Front end I noticed the line in the Radiator but did not believe it was a crack at that time. Well J-B Weld offers a Radiator Repair Kit for patching radiators. Normally I would just buy a new one but I want to wait till I'm ready to replace the Condensing Coil too. That way I get 2 birds at one time.

The prep needed was to drain the Radiator then remove solvent based products first so a Wax & Grease Remover was employed. After a water soaked towel was used to remove water soluble contaminants. Then a brief air dry and on to sanding.

I knew sanding was going to be tough as little access was available so choosing Mechanics Roll over paper backed sand paper allowed my to wrap the paper around the edge of a nylon scraper using the edge as a sanding block. This allowed me to achieve a very good tooth in the Nylon Tank. I used my own Popsicle stick grinding a chisel edge for applying the Epoxy.

There was just no good way to make this a pleasing looking repair, looks like a mud dauber did it. The Epoxy says 5 minutes but more like 2 minutes working time before it started getting hot.

I allowed 8 hours before lowering my car and filling with coolant. Tomorrow I will drive it to Walmart and see if it still leaks.
