    Smile Wasp larvae

The best thing I have found for bait is paper wasp larvae. Get a large nest and tear off the tops of the cells, take out fully matured wasp, and fish with the worms. (Trust me when I say take the fully matured wasp out of the nest and throw them in the lake, you don't want one coming out on it's own)
The bream and crappie seem to just go crazy over these things. Beats anything I have ever tried and they are free.

I will take spikes (maggots) over wax worms just about any day, but for the true bull gills we usually use small live leaches on a tear drop under a bobber.
It is not about the equipment you have to use,
It is about how you use the equipment you have. :D

So what size hook do you use with maggots? And how is it rigged, sink, split shot?

Catalpa Worms bar none but they are hard to find. Nothing beats them. My second choice is cold worms cut into one inch peices. I would like to try those meal worms but they are not sold around hear.

At least here in the south, I've found you don't have to buy maggots in the warm months, just get a tub of coffee grounds (free at starbucks) and throw in whatever fruit scraps you have. The soldier flies will come. You'll get larvae over 1/2 an inch long. I have thousands of them in a small bin. I like to use #6 circle hooks to avoid gut hooking.
