Ain't been too much happen at this lake in the last couple years. I figured it was from the massive amounts of rain the last couple seasons which made the lake get to 14' + several times. Lake turned over too many times. A few years back people were yanking em all year around.

I appreciate the response Dr.. How did that impact current crappie fishing? I understand that a flooded spawn will lead to down years later on. Not doubting you- just interested in the mechanics behind the theory. Are you thinking that these water turnovers result in fish kills?

No I don't think it resulted in fish kill. If I remember correctly the water level got to 15' over numerous times. Didn't they to open the dam to get the water level down each time? If so crappie possibly went through the dam? Then again maybe the big crappie got lock jaw or maybe all those huge catfish we've seen pulled from there are devouring the crappie or maybe the lockness monster lives within the lake wiping out the crappie population??? Just thinking out loud here.

No lake has more floods than Ft Gibson and up to 28' above normal this has been going on ever since the dam was build also the last to release flood waters. The Crappie and Sand bass fishing has dropped off since early 2000 on Ft Gibson. When the flood waters go down you can see fish eggs on the brush. Yes the floods can hurt the spawn but I do not think its the reason fishing is so bad on Oologah the last two years.

The zebra mussels are easily killed by raising the water level, in this case by the floods. When the level is raised by a flood and held at that level for a time the bottom water of the lake, which is anaerobic, will be raised. The mussels can not detach from their place and move, therefore they suffocate. This has happened at Kaw Lake several times as well as other lakes.

Haven't been catching many big fish, but we did catch this 16 inch crappie last weekend. It looked thin, and weighed 1.75. The wife caught another 15 inch crappie and it still had eggs in it and looked like it weighed 1.5 or better. We caught somewhere between 75 and 100 crappie but most of them were 8 and 9 inch fish. We ended up bringing home 15 fish that were good enough to keep. Couldn't buy a bite on jigs until around 10:00, then caught about a dozen after that, the rest were caught on minnows, used a 1/2 lb of minnows and ran out. Brush piles in 13 to 17ft, with most of the fish on top of the brush piles. Caught the 16 inch crappie on a jig, black and chartreuse.
