Dorsal fins I believe is the most accurate?

Going by color only isn't good as white crappie can be pretty black at times.

White crappie have 5-10 vertical bars along their body and black crappie have scattered, random spots.

The most easy and accurate way of identifying crappie is by the amount of spines sticking out of the front of the dorsal fin. White have 5-6 spines and black 7-8 spines

The one I caught had scattered , random spots instead of your typical vertical bars on your white. I should have counted the spines and there would have been no question. I will next time

Black Crappie
• No true pattern to black spots
• 7-8 bony spines in dorsal fin
• State record: 4 lbs., 10 oz.

White Crappie
• Distinct vertical bands of blue/gray spots
• 5-6 bony spines in dorsal fin
• State record: 4 lbs., 15 oz.

catch some small crappie along the rock of the dam. They are taking place of white bass.

Caught 2 saugeye the biggest being 26 inchs and 5 crappie all small and 10 sand bass today so I think a week or so and things should get good
