I have to agree backtocrappie. The justice system is too imperfect to rely on it to kill people. If saved money is your only reason for wanting to put people to death I think you should rethink it. According to the state of Texas it costs tax payers for a death penalty case on average 2.3 million dollars. That's about 3 times what it costs in Texas to keep some one in a single cell at the highest security prison for 40 yrs. In Florida it's 3.2 million. California says it costs tax payers an additional 80 million a year to have a death penalty and New York estimates $118 million extra a year to implement the death penalty. Seems to me that it makes more sense to lock people that deserve it away where they can never again be a threat to society and use the saved money to keep all the other criminals in jail instead of releasing them early because they can't afford to keep them. Just my opinion.

The law in North Carolina has changed so much recently in regards to interrogations and investigations I do not believe you will see many people wrongfully convicted, as there are many catchalls in place to stop that from happening.

We had a homicide here in Ne. and the interrogators found that a nephew had argued with the couple that had been murdered. They interrogated him for a week and knew that there was 2 people involved in the murders. They got him to confess and implicate a friend of his to the murders. This was good only for a short time until they found a boy and girl from Wis. actually killed the couple and that the Nephew and his friend didn't have anything to do with the crime at all. The Nephew is now a Millionaire! and the kids that actually did the crime are on death row here in Ne, but the death penalty is now being attacked for cruel and unusal punishment. A lot of investigators on high profile cases know that if they solve the crime it will make there careers. Some will do anything to make that happen. The trial of Amber Harris is going on right now here and will end up with the death penalty being used if the guy is found guilty. The police thought it was a family involved case and really didn't spend much time looking past the family. They may have saved this young girls life if they would have done their job instead assuming the parents were guilty of wrong doing. The police are not infalibul. (sp)
I am for the death penalty and think is should only take a year for the appeals process to decide guilt or innocents. I also don't think they should sedate them to save them pain. This should be a deterrant to crime and laying on a table and peacefully going to sleep is not a deterrorant to any crime. They are there because they have committed a cruel and painful death to someone and they didn't worry about their victims feelings or pain when they committed the crime. People feeling pain when they are put to death might be a better deterrant to criminals if they know for sure they will feel the same pain as their victims. jmo

I guess NC prosecutor Mike Nifong missed that meeting.

I think I'd like to add that NC is in the top 5 states I'll never revisit based solely on their "Justice" system. Followed closely by SC who has made the news too frequently for nut job cops. I'm content to hop on a plane and fly right over places like that on my way to Disney.

The reason it cost so much for the death penalty is because we allow them to stay there for 20 to 30 years before the sentence is carried out. If there was limitations on the number of appeals that are allowed it would not be so expensive to the taxpayer.

Back to Crappie you are right again, but as you said DNA has set many free. That same DNA is now what is convicting them and knowing we have the right one. I agree the past was not as accurate but now it is.

Crappie, Texas has done this. We have limited them to only 2.

The offenders from other states who are in Texas Prison have a saying about Texas. Come to Texas on Vacation and Leave on Probation lol.

Give all the inmates on death row a DNA testing. If it matches send them on through, if it don't investigate some more. No need to overcrowd the prisons when theyre setting 5th 6th or even 10th (heard it on the news) time offenders loose. An eye for an eye...

DNA testing is not infallible and not all murder trials have DNA evidence. Question...Texas has killed many people including several that were later found to be innocent. How much has it reduced violent crime in Texas? And was it worth killing an innocent person to make sure the guilty ones were killed?

I agree that they shouldn't get a bunch of appeals. Give them 2. And one year to get it done. If after one year your verdict is not overturned, get the needle. Actually I also agree that the person should die in the same manner as the person or persons they killed. Make the punishment fit the crime. We hear so much about the rights of the criminals that the rights of the victims are swept under the rug. Say some guy holds up a gas station killing the clerk. He goes to trial and maybe gets the death penalty. What about the clerk's wife and kids? They get to go through life with no father and without any income he would have brought in. I have very little sympathy for criminals. Yes I know sometimes the innocent are convicted, but I would wager that number pales in comparison the the number of guilty that go free. Death penalty should be used and enforced. make it a deterrant. Be sure people know that if they kill someone, they will lose their own life within 12 months. Also, rapists should get life in prison without clothes. Or, how about we find some island in the middle of the ocean that is uninhabited, drop off the murderers and rapists etc and let them fend for themselves. Drop off ONE load of food and supplies and wave goodbye. Keep a military patrol nearby that will shoot anybody that comes near the place.
