The one question I ask and I even ask my laid off oilfield buddies...what did everyone do for a living BEFORE the oil field boom? Some are waiting on it to all pick back up and once again go back to the oilfield. Guess I am one of the few looking for security when looking for a career!

Very good question. I most certainly understand where you are at. Some of us have been in this business all our lives. Me, started rough necking when I was 16 years old. Worked all the way up, became educated, and continued. Over 40 years now in this business. I am like you, wanting security at this point in my life.

I am a machinist for a major oil service provider. I have been fortunate to survive the down turn so far. I have looked for jobs in more stable industries but, and some jobs are out there but I would have to move my family half way across the country. Also this field that I and many others work in pays very well. Other industries don't match up. I have three young children and my wife can stay home with them. We would not be able to do that if I had a job in a different line of work. If my wife had to get a job we would lose half of her income just to daycare. Not to mention all the other issues would that come from her working. The problem is OPEC and our Commander In Chief doesn't give a Darn , no I should say Hates the oil field. If the U.S. wanted to, the prices could stabilized. We give them military protection and that could be used to get OPEC (Saudi's) line and back off production enough to stabilize the prices.

Don't feel bad at all, just look at the greedy oil production profits over the years, my wallet is happier.

Really? The oil industry made BILLIONS of dollars off the $4 gallon oil prices, so why did the gas have to be that expensive? So they could keep raking in the BILLIONS it's that simple. Now I'm suppose to feel bad about it? Nah.

For lunch, I would like a grilled cheesed sandwich. On rye bread would be nice.

Understood, hate to see people loose jobs that really stinks, believe me I do hate to see that because it affects their lives. But I don't want people telling me I should feel bad when my budget gets a break, and I should want it to go back to taking $70 out of my pocket to fill up my truck. Truth is the oil industry is still raking in money, they just aren't taking care of their people, they are bending to the greedy investor demands, and that's a real shame. They have plenty of money, the numbers speak for themselves.

Yeah, some of them have so much money they've gone out of business.
