Hey. fellas, you DO NOT need to cook, pour, etc. I use the horsehead jigs and all of mine are made by Grizzly Jig Co. Yes, the same Grizzly Jig Co that Jerry got his rod&reel deal from.
These jigs are WELL made. I buy 100 at a time and I doubt you are able to assemble them any cheaper than you can buy and ship from Grizzly. If you are able to drive to Caruthersville, MO, you save on the shipping and get to fondle a lot of gear. Plus, you get to hear a LOT of fishing stories from all the other folks there, both ladies and gents.

    My 2 cents worth.

By the way, NOW is the time to start laying out your GPS patterns for all those hotels you are going to 'plant' this winter.

Moose1am, Now I know why I'm the way I am, and I thought is was just my old age...

    --------------------
Now if you are just doing this every once in a while these precautions may seem like a lot of work and you may not think that lead can hurt you but remember that lead damages the brain and can cause long term memory problems and other diseases. You may be brain damaged already and not think you are. So take care of yourself guys and be careful when working around these toxic substances.

Now if you are getting contaminated with lead and also eating fish with mercury in them then you may start GLOWING IN THE DARK. LOL
    ---------------------

Big Zig, I think that you may have hit on why I don't have the problems that some do with the wheel weight is because I do pour and repour into nuggets several times before I start to pour. I'm surprised at what keeps coming off the lead. When its rather clean is when I start to pour.
    -----------------
If you spend a few minutes melting, skimming impurities, pouring into nuggets, and repeating the process 2-3 times you will seperate the metals enough to have some decent lead to work with.
    ----------------------------

I really didn't know what was happening but I knew the lead worked better. Now if I could just remember what I was doing, it must be the "OLE AGE"...

    Default Fluxes

I know that when they are remelting aluminum to recycle it that they add a flux type material that helps remove the impurities in the melted aluminum.

Do they have anything similar to this for melting lead and purifying the lead?

I have a friend up in Canada that is a metalurist and knows a lot about working with metals. I may email him and ask him this question. He worked with gold in South Africa and now owns his own business.
    Regards,

I add wax to my lead pot then its heating up. The wax will help pull the bad stuff to the top. Its the kind of wax that people pour on top of jars that have been caned.Paraffin wax I think it the name of it.

    Default Rolling your own jigs

You guys that "roll your own" jigs just send me some samples. I will be glad to try them out and give a report. Hey, I am cheap. lol. A good place to buy supplies is Barlow's Tackle or Netcraft. Just remember, it is not what that is on the end of the line, it is what (or who) that is holding the line that counts! Wish I could do this jig making myself, but I am getting to damn old to tie my own shoestrings, well kinda!!!!!
