I've never done very good night fishing out on flats, or in the middle of the lake, but we set up a light or lantern 5-10' away from the bank around cover just before dusk, throw a fistful of cornmeal in the water and come back an hour later in the boat. Cast to the bank and ease it towards you. We are out of the skeeters and catch plenty of fish. Keep some crickets with you too...big bull gills come out to play too! The last time we went was last August and we used an LED floating light hanging from a branch and a green submersible fluorescent in the water at the same time. I suspect one or the other would have worked.

Underwater lights are much better than lanterns. Both will attract fish but the underwater lights do not attract the bugs. Green seams to be better than white. In my opinion of course. You can get cheap lights at Walmart but I suggest getting them from Bob#1 on this sight. I have 2 of his lights. Just got the 2nd one today. The one that I have been using attracts minnows 10-1 against the cheap Bass Pro light.

evidently you've never fished with a lantern. i've seen tornadoes of minnows under the white light lanterns. green lites are a like a lot of fishing things. made to sell. go cheap. go with a lantern. and if it's cool you can warm your hands by the lantern. you can't do that sticking them 4 ft under the water by a green lite. you stick with your green and i'll stick with my coleman and we'll both be happy but i'll have more money left in my pocket.

A couple of fishing trips ago I fished beside this pontoon boat that had been stripped and rebuilt into a crappie fishing machine. The back 1/3rd of the boat was made into a cabin with white tin walls and sliding glass windows. The front was open and had rod holders all along the rail. What was cool was the propane lanterns that was mounted every few feet along the outside of the boat. The guy had piped propane all around the boat and had flexible hoses from the metal pipe to each lantern. It looked like a Christmas Tree. It had rods hanging off everywhere.

    Awesome rig.
