I typically use what I call a torpedo type bobber. Around 2" in length. If I am fishing deep I usually use the type where you thread the line through and then put the little stick to hold in place, or I leave it loose and put a bobber stop on the line with beads and such.
If I am fishing shallow around cover I typically use the same size cork but I use the type that clamps to the line.
I use this size because I find that it allows just enough buoyancy that when the sacalait picks up the bait it tends to lay down in the water.
About 80% of the time I know I have a bite by the cork laying down in the water. We usually set the cork to about 18"-24" and cast to the structure and pop the cork to make it sound like a shad flipping at the top of the water.
I can't leave now; They fixen to turn on.

Deacon, you sound like you fish South Louisiana......lol.... that is the same thing I would have told him. I have always called them cigar floats. With the slip corks, I like to use the little rubber ball type bobber stoppers, so much easier than the string ones or weaving through the plastic thing. These are the ones I like to use. Just stick the string through the loop and slide the rubber ball onto the string and adjust to desired depth.

you have the ring with the little wires wrapped on it, then on the little wires there is a bead and a rubber ball. There are 4 setups on this ring. You can rig 4 lines like this. If you look at the pic, the bead is at the top and the rubber ball beneath it. Then there is the big loop at the end of the wire.
You put the end of your fishing line through the loop, then slide the rubber ball and bead onto the fishing line, slide it up out the way, then the cigar floats have a peg in them, most of the pegs have a hole through them. Slide the fishing line through the hole in the peg, then tie your hook/jig onto the end of your fishing line and adjust the little rubber ball bobber stop up or down, depending on how deep you are wanting to fish. On most rods, the little rubber ball will fit through the eyes on the rod, so if you want to fish 12 foot deep, just slide the little rubber ball up to 12 feet and the float will slide up and down the fishing line til it hits the rubber stop when drop it in the water, or the jig when you reel it back in. You can consistantly fish the same depth that way.
If I remember right, you can get them at walmart for around 1.50 or 2 dollars. To me they are worth the little bit it cost for them.

I use a 3/8" balsa pencil float for popping shallow water (up to 4').

Once I find where they are I set it so the jig is 6-8" above the fish. The first 20 or so casts are worked with the typical popping action. Once I see exactly where they are holding I'll throw past the area then pop it normally until I get to the targeted area then I'll give it a sharp pop, the float dives quietly then shoots up causing jig to dive then shoot back up looking like a fleeing baitfish. It drives them nuts!

The balsa type pencils work best. Walmart has some that are cheap, but the wood and plastic seems to separate after a while.
Your not fishing, unless your crappie fishing!
