I use a 3/8" balsa pencil float for popping shallow water (up to 4').
Once I find where they are I set it so the jig is 6-8" above the fish. The first 20 or so casts are worked with the typical popping action. Once I see exactly where they are holding I'll throw past the area then pop it normally until I get to the targeted area then I'll give it a sharp pop, the float dives quietly then shoots up causing jig to dive then shoot back up looking like a fleeing baitfish. It drives them nuts!
The balsa type pencils work best. Walmart has some that are cheap, but the wood and plastic seems to separate after a while.
Your not fishing, unless your crappie fishing!
