    Default Trailer Bearings

    Hi All,

Anyone have any suggestions on who does trailer bearings in or around the Lafayette area? I am seeing grease run down the rims, and if I take the cap off the grease is 2 different colors inside the hub. I think it definitely needs a repack at least.

Any of the mechanics that do brakes should be able to do trailer bearings also. You can do them yourself if you want to save a few bucks. If you do bring them in to be done, it is a good idea to have the bearings already and just let them change them out for you. You can usually pick up kits for around $20 which includes the bearings, race & seal & cotter pin. You will need 2 kits if you are doing both sides and you will need to know what size and if they are tapered or not. Most small trailers are usually 1" or 1 1/8". Just make sure that they change out the races too, most of them will just try to change out the bearings. Hope this helps some.

Acadiana Bearings on Evangeline thruway at Jefferson has them all, if not can get them promptly. Know folks that have vintage aircraft get theirs there.

There is a trailer place off pinhook across from the autozone. They keep everything in stock and are one of the best around

Have you got bearing buddies or someway to grease them. Jack up your trailer and spin the wheel and see if makes a noise or grinds. If it doesn't you don't need new bearings just needs the ones you have repacked maybe. Its easy to do just take out the cotter pin take off nut slip off hub, front bearing will fall out, take a screwdriver or chisel and bend the grease seal on the back and it will then come out. take it to the parts store and get a new set. Wipe all the grease off of the bearing and inside the hub and you can then take a little gas and clean them up and get the old grease out, or a can of brake cleaner will blow it out of there. Take your gun grease and work into the bearing, reinstall put in grease seal put on spindle snug up nut insert cotter pin and your done.

Parts stores sell a little gadget that hooks to your grease gun and packs the bearings for you, all you do is pump the grease gun. Believe me this is WAY easier than packing them by hand, I have done it both ways and this will save you A LOT of time!
