fish trap is a good lake we fished last spring and caught a lot of fish
Hello all, I am new to this site and crappie fishing also. I live in southwest WV and we are not blessed with many crappie lakes here. My question is where are the best places to fish in Eastern KY? I want to try Cave Run this spring and maybe Yatesville also. Where else is a good place to try within a couple hr drive from Ashland? Thanks for any help

Paintsville, Yatesville, Grayson, Greenbo, and Cave Run are within your range, but I've only fished at Cave Run, so the following info is mostly directed towards that lake :
If you have electronics that are GPS capable, then you need to check out this : Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife Lakes with Fish Attractors
It will give you GPS coordinates to all the cover placed in these lakes by the KDFWR, and identifies what that cover consists of (cedars, pallets, stakes, etc).
You will also want to keep this COE site in your favorites : Louisville District Daily Lake Report ... in order to know lake levels (mostly), but also the temps of the water & dissolved oxygen readings once a thermocline sets up. Click on the blue water level numbers to get a "past year to date" chart, that shows precipitation amounts, lake levels, and inflow/outflow rates. Click on the blue lettered Lake Name, then on "water temp" link, to get a chart showing the water temps & oxygen levels at various depths. Any DO reading below 5 is "dead water" (not enough oxygen for survival over any length of time) ... but, also understand that these readings are taken at the dams of these lakes, and the conditions of the water at other parts of the lake may not be as bad (or good). These readings are not posted daily or weekly, so pay attention to the date on the chart.

Thanks for the information. I am really looking forward to trying new lakes and catching some asap. I will check out the pages suggested. I also look forward to a trip somewhere for a spring week long fishing trip. I used to go to Bugs Island for a week long bass fish but haven't done that in years. May have to try it somewhere in KY this year for crappie.
