    I guess it has to be the DEPTH the fish are holding.
    FAITH, FAMILY, FRIENDS & FISHING...... hopefully in that order but honestly, not always!

    Time…
    Time on the water, time in different conditions, time of year… Time fishing is the key to all of the above.

    Good one slabby joe, if I go to a new lake and talk to a crappie fisherman that is the only thing i ask, I dont ask for where to go or where they have been having success or what they are using, I want to now the depth to target then use maps and electronics to locate structure around that depth range. That has seemed to be a good starting point for me. i dont rule out other depths because it seems you can locate crappie shallow, mid depth, or deep on some lakes i fish year around. I have found most fisherman are willing to give you that info without feeling like you are being intrusive.

    Fishless Dan deserves the credit on my answer ....he opened my eyes to how important this aspect is to finding and catching crappie.
