300yds is too big an area for one boat to claim. Afraid I would have flipped a bouy out and started fishing. Just my 2cents.

Zeepo put it well. He was there first, if you wanted to fish the spot you should of gone there first. Now he went a little over board and was being a hog in how he acted and the size of the area he marked out but you have to respect the fact that he took the time to find the break and mark it and was fishing it. Tough to swallow but you did the right thing in backing off even though you wanted to fish there.
It's not duck season so I have to do something... :D

So...............based on some of the responses I've read on here, what in the h*ll would be a reasonable sized area to mark off to fish??????????

Well I like that answer better than what I had been reading. Based on some of the responses I've read on here, if I get to the dam first and throw out 20 buoys that's ok, because I took the time to find the dam, took the time to mark it off so now the dam is off limits because I was there first and have it marked off. Ok, I understand that might be a bit unrealistic but...... it does reflect some of the responses on here. I'm not trying to start an argument here but....... What this guy did at Melvern, in my opinion is a bit out of line and I understand that we would have all handled it differently. I agree that just getting out on the lake is part of the enjoyment and it's not just about catching fish. But for some of you to defend this guys actions, well I would have to respectfully disagree.

Agree Ozark, no one needs nearly a 1/4mile marked off, especially winter fishing!

You could be like my Father-in-Law BD. During a walleye tournament, he had this guy throwing buoys all over the place and then would keep going further away. My Father-in-Law just went up and started picking them up for the guy... Bold but to the point. The rules are one buoy and 50 feet. Nobody likes anyone moving in on them but you can't answer for what other people do. I will always ask if I can move in and if they don't answer, I will ask louder until they reply. I realize people go to the lake to get away from everyone else but it's not like you were watching them with a spotting scope and saw them catching fish and decided to move in on them.

My rule of Thumb: Ask loud and if no response, ask again. If they are hateful, move away and remember their boat. I have had many people move in on us and we usually have a great talk before the day is over. Hang in there and keep your head held high!
