This is great information and something that I often wondered about. In a world of small numbers of O.E.M. and tons of re-distributors I wondered how many places actually make the stuff and how many simple market it as their own.

Very few make anything or even dye their feathers. When you see JS and a lot of others selling the Hareline Feathers and other products it's because Hareline is a wholesale company like WAPSI and these guys do dye dye their feathers. However I doubt they dye everything they sell, like rabbit fur, I doubt they do much of that themselves. They each have thing that make them popular. One example is Hareline has very good products and their feathers are usually the best you can get for several reasons I will not go into right here. There are not a lot of these companies, but there are a ton of fly shops and all sell materials for tying. Even most places you buy materials do not do any of that themselves, but a few like Crazy Angler and Cascade Crest do dye some items and probably Cascade does more of that since Crystal Antron is their baby.

So many things that look the same are not like Ultra chenille and some use different names for something close to ot, but many are just not the same thing exactly. I know that is confusing as I said it, but don't want to write a book here, LOL!

thanks Skip! I really learned a lot here. It seems there is a lot of hokus pocus going on with the flash products too, the krystal flash and the flashabou, when I see real low prices on the internet and it isn't packaged the same as the hedron products I'm reluctant to bite on it.

You do have to be careful about what you buy or maybe it's more who you buy it from. I have been at this a long time now and because I was tying so much for so long I have accounts at Mfg. and wholesale places enough that I get good prices and good quality, but I sometimes have to buy large enough that I could use it for ever so I sell some of it! Like chenille you have to buy a min of 144 yards of any color you want and that's a lot! So when you want a bunch of colors you end up with a lot of chenille, LOL!

Amyway just when you find something from someone that you really like, keep going there for that! Just my opinion.
