I caught this yesterday at Morse but I have no idea what it is. I threw it back thinking it was a carp but wasnt sure. So, what is it? And is it edible?

Yes sir it is a Carp and yes it is edible with certain qualifications. The cooler and cleaner the water the better. You need to scale them Then filet them. At that point you can brine them and smoke them. You can filet and skin to smoke but they may crumble on you if they are on the smaller side. You can also score (cut 2/3rds of the way thru from inside out towards the skin every 1/2 inch of the length) then dry dredge them in your favorite mix and deep fry til GBD (Golden Brown & Delicious). Add Hushpuppies and slaw and the feedbag is on.

Once the water gets warm they tend to get soft and muddy tasting.

If you can access a cooling pool from and industrial outlet during winter where they may discharge shad caught in the system you can bottom rig cut bait and have one heck of a time that will test your tackle.

My BIL's dad knew how to fix them and it is one of the best tasting fish I ever ate. Knowing how to clean is key to having a good dinner.

Yes and folks use to serve Lobster to the prison inmates because they thought those "Bugs" were trash. You can go to some bars around here and order Fried Carp Steak on Friday evenings, it is quite good but then so are Buffalo, White Sucker, Drum and a host of other fish "if" you know what you are doing with them. I still avoid Puffer Fish but there is a limit to all things.

Get out of your comfort zone and you will find a lot more "Good" things to eat out of your local waters.
