And ... unless you want the whole world to know the coords to these spots you're showing, you might want to turn off or cover up the GPS readings box that's down in the bottom right hand corner.

I'm just suggesting doing these things in order to make the screen pic show more detail, that's viewable to us. Once the pics are taken, you can put all your info settings back like you want them. We don't really need to know THAT much about your spots, and you certainly don't want to be broadcasting the coords to every lurker that might be monitoring this thread. All we want to see/know is how good a picture the screen shows, and how easy or hard it is to interpret what's being shown.

I hear ya CP. I just reread my post which was from my smart phone... I'm glad someone could understand it! I was in the processes of comparing the 455 to the 800 and when I came over that spot, I wanted to snap a photo that I thought was pretty clear. I scrolled left to stop the screen, that is that caused the crosshairs to pop up. I will take your suggestions by minimizing some of the overlay so the screen is more visible. I'm not so worried about the coordinates as I was surround by about 20 other boats anyways. It's a pretty public hole in the winter time. But for purposes of helping others learn, I will try and take some better pics with a real camera, not just my phone.

I did go over one area that as stacked, top to bottom, with fish, but no bites. I should have snapped a shot there. But they should be there again. I will have some special for them Saturday... It wasn't until late in the last week that I start catching some fish by dragging a silver buddy on the bottom. We'll see if that gets any from the big school.

Thanks for the input...guess the thing that made me think something was wrong in my set up was that I took my jig and moved it all around the transducer and I could not see it...not even a line moving across the field of view or anything

From reading other comments about this unit I thought this would be kind of a test to see if everything was set up right?...maybe asking too much of it

    anyway, thanks again

The beam is not a cone it is more of an oval shape. You can see your jig if you can get it into the beam. I fish with a 3/4 oz metal jigging spoon sometimes and if it is in the beam, you will see it. My transducer is mounted on the trolling motor and I turn the motor around until I can see the jig.

I have been thinking about buying one of these units for awhile now and the info here is great. Thanks. My question is how do you mark waypoints when you find astump, brushpile or something you want to mark. Also when you see the stump or whatever on the screen is it directly under the boat at that point? This thread is very educational btw, thanks to all.
    God is good...all the time.:D

Actually, slipfloater .... that "stump" could be anywhere within the coverage area of the unit's cone, so it may or may not be directly under the boat (transducer) as that would depend on the water depth.

Remember, this unit (di) is sending out a ping signal that's not very "thick" (front to back @ 6deg) but is a 45deg angle (side to side) @ 800kHz ... and 75deg @ 455kHz. That produces an elongated oval shaped coverage area. This is much different than what a regular depthfinder does, which is putting out a true "cone" shaped signal of around a 20deg angle, which results in a circular pattern of coverage. (20deg angle in every direction)

As for marking a waypoint ... I've only done it on the emulator program, on my computer, but this is how I got it to put waypoints on the chartmap : with the split screen of map/sonar, I used the arrow key pad to move the crosshairs to a point on the map, then hit the Enter Key TWICE. That put a numbered waypoint icon on the chartmap. I would think that in "realtime" use, it would work the same way ... but I'll leave that up to those that have used their unit to mark waypoints, to confirm or explain how to. I'd really like to know, myself !!

Entering a waypoint on the water is a simple two button process. One brings up a menu that has an "enter waypoint" option and then hit enter. That is simple. If you bring up you map, it will show a trail of where you have been and you can follow the trail back to where you were. The GPS portion works well on this unit as far as I am concerned.

I continued to run the unit on 455/800 early in the day and also flipped through the colors. I left it on blue for a while, but ended up on Sepia most of the time. The top pics is a school of shad, up to 12". We found out by snagging a few. The second is just fish and you can see a jigging spoon falling to the bottom.

I got this unit a few weeks ago and tried it out yesterday for the first time. I am VERY impressed, the pictures were crystal clear (you could count the number of stakes in a condo). I've got some work to do on the mapping as the map did not move along as the boat was moving, it just stayed in the same spot. The base map even has contour lines for our lake (2,000 acres).

wow! this is what I was hoping to see on my elite 5 dsi! So what were your settings? i.e. contrast and other stuff I will try to duplicate next time I go out. Looks like you are in about the same depth as my local lake...around 15ft.

Thanks for the pics...makes me feel better about what I should see

From the pics, you can see the difference in the 455 vs 800. I say still check between the 455 and 800 or use the split screen until you are comfortable with what you are seeing. I believe the contrast is up all the way, but that is something I have not messed with. As far surface clarity, that is also dependent on the water. I flip through the Off - High to see which gives me the best picture. I have been lucky to have been spending a lot of time in a creek with TONS of fish. It is letting me get used to the images of various fish. The pics however, I think were with surface clarity off.

Another interesting note was discussed before is the shape of the fish. While moving, just trolling, the fish appear as dots/ovals. It's as if you can count the fish in the school. But when you stop moving, they are long lines. It's pretty neat. Wish I took more pictures. The fish weren't biting so I had to grind.
