    Alphahawk,

In your first post in this thread, you mentioned Gekkabijin MX Ajing as part of your arsenal. Could you comment on your experience with it? I wanted a Daiwa Ajing setup to complement my Shimano Ajing set up and thinking that MX Ajing paired with MX LT may be a good bang for my buck, accounting for the sales. I want it to be heavier power than my ultralight Soare combo and plant to use it for saltwater jigs and finessing plastics for bass.

As always, I appreciate you input and congratulations again on a fabulous find!

    Everyone,

Has anyone else had experience with Daiwa Gekkabijin MX Ajing?

    Best.

The Daiwa MX Ajing rod was the most rigid Ajing rod I have ever used. When I first got it I did not know what to make of it. It was extremely sensitive......and even though it was very rigid it would bend into a nice curve when hooking larger fish. I had fun catching bluegill on it but it was really too much rod for bluegill....crappie. I had the 7’ 1” model. I think it will fit exactly what your are looking for....mine is 5 years old but I would bet the new models are just as rigid. Here are pics of the first 2 fish I caught on the MX using Trout Magnet SOS 2# test line. I thought I was going to break the freaking rod. I had it bent into a big C horsing these 2 fish. The Smallie came first and gave me quite a test and battle. But that carp tested the rod...line...reel. I mean that carp was a battle to remember. The rod really shined. The only other Ajing rods I have that could have handled those fish are the Corto.....the Truzer......but neither of them are as rigid as the MX Ajing.

Thank you for the detailed reply, Alphahawk! Quite a fish to hook on a 2-3 lbs line. I am going after 7' 9" ML model. I was surprised to find it considerably heavier than the next one down the power, and I assume it'll be quite stout.

A question about lure ratings for your MX ajing: would you say they are true to the rod's real life range? It seems some manufacturers tend to have broader lure ratings in the same category than others. Daiwa seems to fall on the side of more narrow weight ranges. Shimano appears to be the opposite...

Here’s the thing to know about Ajing-Mebaru rods. As I understand it the lower lure ratings are not all about casting distance. In those rods the lower lure rating is the lowest weight the rod can detect the resistance of the jig. The Japanese use those rods for detecting the “Off Bite”. I have spent a ton of time reading about the off bite......rather than go into great detail I’ll let you look it up....LOL. Basically when they no longer feel the resistance of the jig they set the hook. Very few US anglers use that technique. Let’s face it....one is not going to be able to feel the resistance of a 1/64 ounce jig with an Ugly Stik UL rod. I feel all the rods I own are true to their lure ratings. I do find most of my rods have a sweet spot for the top end. As an example...my 2018 FAX SUL has max rating of 3.5 grams....I find anything over 2 grams just doesn’t feel right. But keep in mind I’m using jig heads on that rod....which is not it’s designed purpose.

    Regards

Thank you again, Alphahawk. I figured the same about the lower rating. I wouldn't expect to cast a 0.1 g jig head a country mile even on a rod rated down to 0.1 g. The laws of physics do not change.

It is the top rating that I am particularly curious about. I believe in your first post you mentioned that about half of the top rating would be optimal and anything higher would compromise jigging (likely, not spooning). My current ajing rod is rated up to 8 g, yet I cannot imaging using anything close to that for jigging in the right mind. At the same time, for MX Ajing 79ML-S rated up to a similar 10 g, Daiwa recommends lures in the 7 g range...

What are your expectations of this new rod? Taking it to the Red River? Bluegill and Shellcracker? Are the AGS more sensitive than the high end Torzite? Just curious, this is the most informative JDM forum site that is real user driven.

My biggest expectation is to have an very soft rod with extreme sensitivity. I have the Palms Egeria XUL and while I got my money’s worth it is lacking in the sensitivity department.....but it is a whole lot of fun to fish with. I have wanted an AGS rod for quite a while but was not wanting to pay the $600 for it. AGS guides are more rigid and much lighter than titanium Torzite....and from users who have both they report the AGS guides are more sensitive. The rod recovers faster with the AGS guides and from articles I have read casting is more accurate. I also want one to use in the real world of panfishing and of course some trout fishing as well. I want to be able to talk about rods with AGS guides and to do that I have to use one. St Croix just paid, what I can only assume is a pretty good fee, to Daiwa to use AGS guides on their new Legend Extreme line. St Croix was quick to note they will be the only US rod company allowed to use these guides. At the price I just had to get it. As we have talked about before when you get to the high end you can be splitting hairs talking about sensitivity. While a Tict Ice Cube Rockin’ Drift is not a trout rod......it is the most expensive rod I own and is soft in action....and the sensitivity of it is spooky good.....so it will be a good comparison. I communicate sometimes with a Japanese trout angler. He has a Presso Limited AGS. When I asked him how sensitive the rod was and I quote “It is so sensitive you can feel the fish chasing the lure”.....LOL.
