I caught an 8 weight on clearance last year....couldn’t pass it up at the price. Nothing in my fly fishing world warrants an 8 weight. I thought about trying it as a jigging rod, but so far that’s as far as I’ve got.......thinking!
Great Post, My spinning rod was a JC Williams spin rod with a Johnson Century spinning reel. It was a great setup, but the lines were not up to todays standard, many breaks at knots. After a spin with the Navy, I learned how to tie some knots.

I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.
Have been using fly rod blanks for ten years, mostly the 4 pce ones as two pce fly rod blanks are hard to find. Usually use a 6-7 wgt blanks and use microwave guides as I have found that the theory behind microwave guide spacing is very truthful as far as distance casting. Haven't had a break of any pole in ten years! Good luck!!
Mind explained microwave guides? And spacing.
Never heard of them
Thanks

The point of the stripper guide having the second ring is to pull the line to a strait line so that it doesn't slap the guides going up the guide train witch they say the slapping standard guides have shortens the cast. I have built identical rods one with the fuji high K frame set and then one with the microwave guides and saw no difference in casting distance. I used the same reel, line, lure and built the rods with the same handle and blank, so the only difference was the guides. Some people think that they are the greatest thing ever then people like me who think its just a different guide set. They have slow motion videos showing how the guides change the line path going up the rod, if you want to watch it and see for yourself. To help you decide what guide set you want to pick. They do work as they intended, I will stay that.
GB, spot on again my friend. We did the exact same test.
My favorite rod for throwing light jigs is a 7 foot light fast MHX. I purchased the same blank for a buddy and he built it with microwave guides. We saw no difference in casting ability.
I will say that I believe the Microwave stripper guide would be an advantage to someone that didn't size a reel to the blank before building and set their stripper too close. Or, if someone upsized a reel on their rod. Standoff from the handle to the bail is vastly different between a size 10 and 15 reel. Or larger.
