Yeah. Saw this a couple weeks ago. There was some debate on wether it was a steering failure or bow hook. Bow hook can happen when riding a wake and lifting off the throttle at the wrong time. The bow goes down with the V catching a lot of water causing the rear end to swing around to out run the front end. The driver lifted as they were coming off the wake. He could have lifted because of coming off the wake or because he felt something wrong with the steering.
The steering breaking under power would cause the motor to torque hard over fast causing the same result. He was probably running a hot foot and the boat would have slowed to idle but would still be in gear creating a still dangerous situation. Being attached to the kill switch and wearing pfds saved their lives for sure. One second everything is fine. The next your in the water with a inflated pfd wondering what the hell just happened? Think of the disorientation that You would feel if it had been you and you had not been wearing a pfd. A Grim situation for sure.
