Visiting Springfield soon
Don, enjoy he drive. I've done it 4 times, once solo with two cats in the back seat (never again)
Bank fishing near Springfield is tough however you mentioned "stationed in DC" so I'm assuming military. Ft Belvoir has a nice fishing pier near the outdoor rec center that gets you into Pohick bay which leads to the Potomac river. Never fished here but have heard some good reports. I drove by it on Sunday and it was iced over. Another option is Burke lake which is about 20 minutes west of Springfield. I usually fish the Occoquan Reservoir 20 minutes south but it has to be the worst bank fishing lake around. The regional park off of rt 123 puts you in the river section of the Occoquan and there are a couple of bank fishing spots there. Yellow Perch should be starting their run soon.
As far as bait shops go, good luck. The traditional bait shops are pretty much non existent. Your stuck with the retail chains like Dick's. There is a BPS about an hour north near BWI airport.

Thanks, I figured it might be a long shot. Yea, my son-in-law is Navy and assigned to the Pentagon. Maybe he and I can check out the pier you mentioned.
I was hoping to find a good tackle store. Seems the same all over, the good small ones are all gone and all that is left are the big guys.
