In case you haven't found it yet, DGIF provides details on all public lakes in the state, here. Glen Allen is in Henrico County--the yellow zone on the DGIF map. There are several small ponds & lakes in Henrico and the City, but you're limited to bank fishing. Chesterfield County offers lake fishing at Pocohontas State Park (Swift Creek Lake.) The best options are roughly an hour from you: Lake Anna, Chickahominy Lake, Diascund Reservoir, and Little Creek Reservoir. All of these places are productive and you can usually get up to date condition reports from C.c members. In addition to the lakes, there are several access points along the James River downstream from Richmond.

Swift Creek Lake, Diascund, and LCR are trolling-motor-only, so boat wakes are not a problem.

It sounds like the best bet to get you onto the water & some fish into the cooler will be for you to ride with someone else whose rig is set up for crappie fishing in the nearby waters. When you see what works best for you & Diane, it will be easy to rig your boat in a similar fashion.

If Corker or Doodlum or Slabin or other local will let me know if the crappie are in the pit below Osborne, I will set up for pushing and pulling corks and take them there after work. We can push 4 poles and pull 6 corks with minnows until Jake get tired of catching!!!!!!!!

Some check and let me know. Diane and Jake should be comfortable in my boat and we will only be a quarter mile from the ramp.

That can be arranged. You sure can't beat the ride time from the dock to the fish!

    Hi Jake,

I am in the end stages of colon cancer and can relate to your situation. I can show you and Diane how to long line and tight line fish for crappie if you want to learn. No casting involved. Hold the rod long line fishing and reel the fish in when you feel the thump. Just watch the tip of the rod in the holder tight line fishing and reel the fish in when the tip starts shaking. It only takes a little more energy than sitting still to fish these ways. I live just a few miles from Beaverdam Swamp Reservoir in Gloucester. It is a good place to fish these methods and you can rest at my house before and after fishing as needed. I am now retired and can go fishing any time we all feel up to it. I usually feel better in the afternoons. I will need some help from you to get my boat back on the trailer if you decide to go with me. It takes all the strength I have these days to accomplish that task.

Jake, These are some good guys here and I have met most of them. I would not hesitate to get in any of their boats and fish with them for how ever long You can go. They will help You get on fish, put You on some good holes and teach You a lot. Great bunch of folks. You have come to the right place.CF

    Jake and Diane,

There is a good chance I will not have to work next Tuesday, March 27th. I will know tomorrow. Would you be interested in fishing a little while that day? We can fish 10 minutes or several hours. I will leave the day open. I know that Diane will not know how she is feeling until time to go. I have everything we need. I will pick up minnows and have all the long rods to drift around with. You can bring a casting pole for yourself. My plan it to put out some minnows under corks and drift around over some good warm spots.

I suggest we go to the James river. We will be close to the ramp. Will try the shallow flat and if that doesn't work we can try a close by piece of deep water, main river structure.

My only requirement is that you promise to be honest with me about how Diane is feeling. I will fish, with or without you. So if we make plans, and she gets to feeling poorly on the way down, that is fine. If we fish 5 minutes and you need to go, that is fine. If she feels great, we will fish as long as you want. I will be out playing around, so you guys can show up after the day warms up a bit.

My boat has a good amount of room. Bring a cooler, snacks, boots, gloves, blanket or whatever else ya'll need. My boat has good sidewalls, and I would expect that you both will feel safe and secure in it. We will were our life jackets, so if you have favorites bring them. I have quite a selection and can supply them.

Might have some river intel by then. And maybe even have a companion boat or two. As Corker and Doodlum like to follow me around and steal my spots anyway!!!

Think it over and we will watch the weather as Tuesday approaches. We can launch from either Osborne landing in Varina or Dutch Gap rame beside VA power in Chester. The fishing hole is smack dab in-between.

Hello everyone. Thanks for all the replies. I was talking to Diane about next week, Monday or Tuesday. She told me that she really would like to see the Cherry Blossoms in DC. It is something she always wanted. I did not know this, but I am working on trying to get a hotel to stay at overnight. Know it is not that far, but think it would be best. I am holdig off til the last minute for reservations, even for this, not sure.

Also, as for all the offers to take us out, I appreciate it and Diane does also, but I need to let you all know, I cannot convince her to go. I have tried. She says, she has lost her hair, has intestinal issues, at times and also cannot go out long. She has always been a little shy, but now it is more embarrased or self aware. Bottom line is she wants to just go out with me. And as I said, hate to leaver her too long alone, so, guess I may need to pass on all the great offers. We may still make it out for a little and get lucky. Actually, 3 keepers, 2 if big is all we need. Sometimes things just do not work out well, we are getting to see that alot. I know as it gets worse, chances will be fewer. If we make it out, will be sure to give an update and maybe a pic, so you all know that request was real.

    God bless you all.

I understand completely Jake. I'd be glad to show you what little I know sometime. I don't know anything around Glen Allen, but you can jump in the boat with me on the James and fish a while. Then you can bring Diane back whenever you want. We can do it in short order on a Monday or Tuesday evening after I get off of work.
