I found a school on the CT river in 16 feet of water a few days ago, and just anchored and cast to them . There were hitting, every cast -- I was fishing Mr Crappie and Arkie shad type soft plastics on a 1/32oz bismuth jig heads (lead not allowed in VT) and 4 pound test.
Because it was easy fishing, I decided to try different colors out to see if there was any difference. I had a few mixed brands, but basically light blues worked well, dark and black did not, nor did green. I only had one red sparkle type and it seemed to do well, but was soon shredded. Pink body chartreuse tail did quite well. Clear sparkle type seemed to do the best of all.
I decided to keep some for the table, but five's my limit when filleting fish for the family. I kept five ranging from 11" to 12-1/2" and then called it quits. It was only a couple hours from when I started rowing from the launch in my boat Flier, until I was back.
I got nearly two pounds of fillets out of those 5. I don't know how many I'd caught and released before them, maybe fifteen or so, most about 10-11". They were still hitting when I left, but sometimes it feels good to just quit while you're ahead on a good day and savor it as a memorable outing. Well that's just me and just some times. If they're not biting I can go all day, for some reason!
Good job. Nice observations. Thanks for sharing.
