    Default New Member Introduction

    Greetings from Zavalla, Texas.

Posting here since I will be pretty much Lake Sam Rayburn specific.

I have a home on the water (Sam Rayburn) just West of Cassels-Boykin.

    I have a Pro-Gator 154S with a Merc 40 - preparing to go fishing.

All of my reels need to be respooled - what is the recommended line weight for fishing the brush tops with jigs on light weight rods and reels?

Besides line weight, any magic line color or manufacturer to fool the elusive sac-o-lait?

I prefer braid, and use 10# test / 4# diameter Fireline Hi Vis on all of my jiggin poles. People will complain about the cost of braid but I disagree, I've had six jiggin poles spooled with the same line for three years and haven't even reversed it yet, figure I'm going to get at least 5 years out of it before changing line. I figure with the money we have tied up in boat, gear, and equipment the price of a spool of braid is cheap, I know that in three years I would have spent more money replacing mono because I would change pretty regular due to line memory that mono gets so bad. When you hang up with braid you'll pull loose a lot more jigs than you'll lose, and with mono it seemed like almost every hangup meant a re-tie. The most important thing to me about braid to me is the increased sensitivity, I can feel the jig so much better, thus feel the ghost bite better than I can with mono, especially when vertical jiggin deep brush. Maybe it's just me, but I know I've caught fish on braid that I never would have known hit the jig when I used mono. If I'm ever concerned about water clarity and the braid "maybe" spooking the fish, I'll tie on a 4'-6' clear floro leader, but that doesn't happen to often unless I'm fishin shallow. The only crappie pole I have mono on is my dock shooters, for those it's 6# Hi Vis Mr. Crappie mono. Just my 2 cents worth.

to the forum. and remember, to each his own. I like both braid and mono, depending on the situation/location. Carry more than one
rig and be prepared. Tight lines to ya.

Welcome 87MH, looks like we are almost neighbors. I fish out of Cassel Boykin a lot too. I'm on an old Pontoon with a Tan Canopy and sometimes a couple different colored umbrellas on the front, come by and say hey. Ferdi aka Fred

Welcome to the site and board! I live over on Toledo Bend, not so far away from you. Been a long time since I fished Rayburn, but when it's stained here I use 10-2 Power-Pro a lot and when it clears up I go to Mono. Sometimes when stained if I use mono I like the Hi Viz Yellow so I can see it better. Some like smaller line than this and some go down to 4#, but I don't see the need and 8 to 10 should be fine. I just bought some Fluorocarbon line to try in 10# test. I plan on using this some for some drop shotting I want to try shallow.

Many thanks to all for the welcome. Also thanks to the sponsers and posters here on the Forum for sharing sales and features information on the equipment necessary to outfit a boat.

With help from many posters, and several hours studying the Forum archives, I have purchased a Fishfinder/GPS/Mapchip and soon should be on the water in search of the local honey hole.

My wife, Mary, and I have taken the boat out for a couple of hours for the last two days, and each day are learning a new appreciation for life on the water. Several birds species were spotted each day that we had not noticed before.

I can say that one of the local fisherman limited out yeaterday, so I know that there are fish to be caught.

Thanks again for the welcome, and I know I will have questions in the short future.
