    Question QUestion about life jackets

I was reading in another forum, they were saying starting May22, 09, that in boats less than 16 foot you had to wear a life jacket all the time, and over 16 just when running? Is this just in Mississippi or in Tennessee also?
    Thanks

Jaxxman, I haven't heard that. It could be a new state law. I will find out for you ASAP. I am in the US Coastguard and enforce boating safety.

Thanks, I have been onTWRAs website and have not found anything.. I am hoping this is just in Mississippi.. I was reading about Grenada and Sardis, so if any are going to MIssissippi , you might want to check into it.

I used to be the same way....I convinced my wife that it would be a good idea to pay $100 for a life jacket (sospenders) 3 Christmases ago, and I wear that thing all the time. It's so lightweight that most of the time I forget that I have it on. As a matter of fact, 2 weeks ago, I had left the boat ramp and was at the gas station pumping gas before I remembered that I still had my lifejacket on.

The MS forum had a post about it a while back. It's only the big 4 in North MS. Not in any other states. The USACE is implementing it within the MS portion of the Vicksburg Dist only. Check out this link for more info...safe boating yall.

I just sent an Email to the Cheif of Boating for the Nashville area about this questions. I will post when I get a reply.

As for TN that is not true. I talk with the Boating officer today about it. As some of you know I am in the USCG and work here in Nashville with boating safety.

The only laws that go with this is...

    1. I CG approved lifejacket for everyone onboard the boat. (can be stored)
    2. a CG approved Type IV (Throwable) onboard. Boats over 16'(Needs to be out while the boat is underway. "sit on it")
    3. Children under 13 are required to wear the life jacket at all times when the boat is underway. (Personally I don't give warnings for this one, its your kids people!!!)
