Default End of March Big Sandy KY fishing report

Hifolks. Welcome to Richard Williams Outdoors.

Thewater levels here on Kentucky Lake have pretty much stayed the same 354 and ahalf for most of the week. And unless we get quite a bit of rain, they will notchange very much until the end of the month. TVA usually starts bringing thelake levels up around the first part of April until they reach summer pool at359. The surface temperatures are running in the upper 40’s to the lower 50’s.
The crappie have started moving up a little and will begoing to their per-spawn areas of the lake getting ready for their yearlyspawning ritual. When the water temperatures reach into the mid to the upper50’s, they will begin to move into the shallow waters.
Last weekend, there were a lot of folks on the lake tryingto get in on their share of early pre-spawn crappie. However, most found thecrappie hitting very slow or not at all. The folks that did catch a good messof fish, were fishing on the drops and ledges in 16 to 18 feet of water withtheir baits around 14 to 15 feet deep. The fish were right on the break of thedrops waiting for the bait fish to swim off the edge of the ledges. The betterbaits for this week have been a Southern Pro orange and chartreuse jig tippedwith crappie nibbles or the baby bass minnow tubes tipped with crappie nibbles.
Last Saturday, the lake was full of boats until aroundnoon. Then a lot of them gave up and went home because of the slow bite. Butfor the folks that stayed, the fish really perked up and started to bite around1:30 to 2:00 that afternoon.
My ole buddy Donald Barns and a friend fished that day andcame in with 40 keepers. However, he said that most of the fish came later inthe day. He was fishing on the sides of the drops and ledges with his baitssuspended up around 12 to 13 feet deep. He said when he moved off the top ofthe ledges and the baits hit the drop, the fish would hit the baits. Theycaught most of their fish on dark colored jigs like the Southern Pro black, blue, and chartreuse stinger shads tipped with crappie nibbles.
The crappie spawn is just about here. So get your equipmentready and get out there to catch your share of Kentucky Lake crappie.
