Thumbs down Watts Bar Report 4/24-28

Here is my report from last weekend, more bass than crappie:
Well, we had terrible weather. Rained heavy every day. Winds from 15-30 mph, tornado Saturday evening in Mississippi. Worse conditions I have every fished in for 4 days. Whitecaps and swells on main lake up to 3’. Didn’t matter, just fish the windy banks and the fish were there. Saw a lot of bass on the nests. However the largemouth bite was on. 6 of us caught and released 330 bass. Big fish was 5-11, second was 5-3, third was 4-11. Best bait, shallow crankbaits in rootbeer chartreuse. Bass also hit shakeyhead green pumpkin, Ricos/buzzbait early in am, spinnerbait and black/blue jig. Crappie fishing was the worst I had ever seen. Only caught around 20, with only 10 keepers. On top of all the problems, my buddies trolling motor quit working Monday evening. He left and went home early Tuesday as well as 2 other guys. Of course the best weather was yesterday, the day we left.
No one was catching very many crappie. The most we saw or heard out of Piney Point resort was 10 caught one morning. The fish were scattered. We marked alot of fish, they just would not bite. We were marking fish 12-18' in 30-40' of water. We even tried nite fishing with a green light. I'll be back in the fall.

glad you tore the bass up at least that filled in the gaps of the trip. i made my first trek to watts bar so far this yr yesterday as i have been on loudon most every day. weather was horrible 20mph winds fri-sunday.

fished from daylight til noon and 5-7:30 yesterday and caught 70 with 23 keepers. fish were suspended and much like you we marked a bunch of fish that would not bite.

bites came in bunches and they would just shutdown. all fish were caught in 10-15 ft of water longlining and they were all full of eggs.

I hear the lake level is gonna be full pool next week. I fished 2 days on the upper part of the lake, Little Emory and Emory river sections. I found a protected cove from the bank where there was little wind. Whitecaps on the big water just a few hundred yds away. Bad news was it was only 8' deep. Caught a lot of small crappie but only 4 keepers. Got loads of bluegill and shellcrackers and a few redeyes. At one time was catching bream on most every cast on chartreuse Popeye flies, along with white and yellow bass. Also got a few small catfish on cut bait but the largest was only a 4-1/2 lb flathead.

Basky told it all. We crappie fished out of Arrowhead and mostly Whites Creek. Fished as far downstream as Edens.
Our Best day was 11 crappie. 8 one day and 6 one day. Nothing in the smaller coves or deep docks. Marked lots of fish in 30'. Threw everything except the kitchen sink at them. Minnows was the choice. Caught 2 trolling 15' in 30' on chartreuse tipped with minnows.
2 Ky. trollers were blanking til Thursday and they finally found 8 trolling 20' in whites creek on chartreuese. Other people were only catching 4 or 5 fish some none. Talked to 2 guys staying at Terrace and they said they slayed them in March and now had 2 fish in 2 days fishing. It was bad. Started raining hard on us one day and we headed in and it was sleeting. The sleet was stinging my face as we were trying to get in at 30mph over white caps.
We caught several good size greens and browns but we were fishing for crappie, and we don't keep bass.
I guess if it wasn't for the bad days we wouldn't appreciate the good days.
We still enjoyed our trip. Talked to a lot of really nice and interesting people from several states. I only wish it wasn't a 9 hour drive for us down there. I'm getting to old for those long trips. lol
