    Default Hooks for stripers????

Are yall using the same hooks for down lines as flat lines???? I was going to give that a try this Sunday at Wateree. How bout a gamagatsu shiner hook?
I've heard some of the guides in NC use a #6 gami treble hook for free lines.
Seems to me that a circle hook would be too heavy a gauge metal for hooking shiners for them to swim and stay alive. Also how much lead on the down lines?

Would anybody share what lure they use when casting at schooling fish? I know thats probable top secret:p

I would like to meet some of you regulars on crappie.com, what chanel to most use on the VHF?

20' Tidewater bay boat with way too many rod holders (23 I think)
    I don't fish because I want to, I fish because I HAVE to !

    Moma tried real hard.

I use a 3, 4, 5 ought circle depending on bait size. 2-3 oz. lead with swivel and 18-24 in. leader. NO MORE than 14 lb. test line, especially in clear water. I have caught most of my fish casting on 3-4 inch white Ivey shad rubber jigs, with 3/8ths or 1/2 oz. jig head. Some people use Rattletraps, you really have to just find out what they're feeding on and get close to it with your lure. You'll find that there are not a lot of secrets on this board. Everybody pretty much shares days, times, locations, and what they are catching them on. Watch the board and we'll tell you what days we are going, and where we are gonna be. Just DO NOT follow the BEAST if you see a fellow sitting on a bucket!!!!! :D

"...Are yall using the same hooks for down lines as flat lines???? ..."
So far I have mot found a big difference in hooks. I have used with success everything from 1/0-4/0 Gamkatsu Octopus Circle hooks and Octopus "J" hooks.

"...How bout a gamagatsu shiner hook?..."
Have not tried them, but spoke to some folks that have and they swear by them.

"...Also how much lead on the down lines?..."
I use 1/4-1 ounce egg sinkers.

"...Would anybody share what lure they use when casting at schooling fish? I know thats probable top secret..."
No secret. We were throwing various white swim baits, and the smaller baits (3") seem to work better. The Storm baits worked great on Saturday, and some other local made baits we found worked during the week.

"...I would like to meet some of you regulars on crappie.com, what chanel to most use on the VHF?..."
I am on Channel 69, but I scan them all.

I just read an article where they were using 8/0 Octopus hooks on the big 30-40 pounders up in the northeast. DANG!!!

1-i usually use 3/0 or 4/0 circle hooks or a #8 treble for downlines and freelines
    2-never used a shiner hook
    3-usually a 1oz egg sinker,
    4-usually use the"little fishies",they are awesome,or 1/4 or 3/8 oz bucktails
    5-i scan all,but mostly 69 as well

i use a 2/0 gamagatsu octopus on down lines and a #6 treble on freelines. for casting, little fishies, 1/2-to one oz road runners, storm swim baits. whatever i happen to pick up. i have no favorites on casting baits as i dont do that much school chasing. usualy keep 2 or 3 rods ready to cast. right now one has a 1oz road runner, another a lil fishie and one a storm swim bait. casting rods filled with 12 lb line. down lines loaded with 14 lb golden stren with 12 lb leader. 2 oz egg sinkers. 9 ft ugly stick spinning rods.
listen with your eyes---its the only way to beleive what you hear...

Can you guys tell a difference in the bite on mono leaders and flurocarbon leaders? Some folks have told me that Fluro makes a big difference.

Thank you all for all the info!!!!!

I have found a bait shop that sells big bass minows for $4.50/dz and they are realy big, 5-6".
They also sell an intermediate size for #1.50/dz and they are 3-4".
If these Wateree fish like small baits, I'm going to fish with some of those smaller bass minows, use a #2 dropshot hook and some 10lb flourocarbon leader. When fishing with lures for Spanish Macks at the OBX, we always use flourocarbon leaders because they are the most leader shy fish I can think of and it makes a huge difference.

I guess I need to also be on the lookout for any red bucket activity:D :D
    I don't fish because I want to, I fish because I HAVE to !

    Moma tried real hard.

I have never tried Flurocarbon leaders. But now you have my curiousity up, I'll get me a spool of 14 lb. test and try it. Sometimes and old dog can learn a new trick.:p
