REALLY Slow On This Part Of Hartwell
With the Winter drawdown and then all the rain since Christmas, the west side of Upper Lake Hartwell has been REALLY tough. We have had a half dozen trips in a row without getting even 1 hit. Do any of you guys fish anywhere between Eastanolle and Payne Creek? We fish Gum Long mostly, but with the rain and the muddy water, we can’t find a fish anywhere. Does ANYONE have any suggestions besides staying home and watching TV?

Have you checked the docks up to the bridge on gumlog. I don't know what the water temp is there but it is running 48 to 50 degrees on the hill. If you have side finding capabilites with your fish finder check docks around the shallow water. Sometimes crappie do the unexpected....the flat above the bridge warms up quicker and you may find crappie in that area. The rip rap at gumlog bridge may hold crappie there also. Hope this helps..tommy

We have tried the docks all the way to the bridge. Thanks for the tip about the rip rap. Aren’t the swallows nesting under the bridge fun to watch in the Summer? I think they must be Barn Swallows. Same family as Purple Martins. Isa 40:31.

Martins are good at nest building, anchoring to concrete and steel. They are fun to watch. In georgia if they remodel a bridge, it can'rt be during martin season. A job was shut down about 10 years ago until the martins got their young raised....as cold as the water is now crappie will find the warmest water, even in shallow bays. That area above the bridge has held crappie during cold weather spells for me before.
