    Default Hartwell 2-7-23

Fished Hartwell for a few hours looking at a part of the lake I had not fished for maybe 5 years. I was mainly wanting to fish felled trees that the tops reached deeper water or had drop offs close by. Found one bank that had 6 big trees laying in the water in a 100 yard stretch and the water dropped off to 25' within 20 yards of the bank. I was seeing bait balls but not much else but decided to jig those branches in the deep water. Well the crappie wasn't there but the bass were feeding on the bait. Spent two hours catching my first fish of the year along with 7 more bass all biting a 1/16 oz jig with a 2'' baby shad. At the end of the day when I was getting ready to leave I seen something on the bottom 28' deep and dropped the jig down to the limb and caught the only crappie of the day being a 12 incher being white with no color. Seems the crappie are liking the deep water right now. First fish of the year,

Glad you got out and caught some fish. I always have a smile when I can remove some of those "trash" fish. HA! That cold water has the crappie almost white with no color but that will start changing soon enough. Congrats.

Good that you got out and caught some fish. I like exploring new areas too. Sounds like a good area to know, sometime I bet those trees are loaded.

That’s a great trip, catching is better than a skunk any time.
