    Default Lake Murray 6/23

Me and crappie snapper went down to Murray last night to try the striper down on the lower end of the lake,we got on the water about 8 and headed up towards spence islands to try that area first and work our way back to the towers,we were marking tons of fish but nada bite up that way,we eased on back down the lake some as the wind got up a litttle and it was blowing from the dam so we headed on back down that way to get out of it,water was alot calmer down that way,we fired up the sodium lights and started marking fish just about everywhere and at all depths, still no takers,we did not get a single bite until about 12:15,we wasnt the only ones by the way, didnt see not one fish caught, then the lightning starts in the distance and the bite starts as well, about all boats were netting fish,we caught 6 and had several other good pull downs, but didnt get it all,we lost the biggest right at the boat as i was getting ready to dip him up,he easily was 10lb or better, about 2 am the lightning was getting real bad and real close so we had to leave biting fish, the bite will only get better for the next couple of months down on that end,all fish were caught on live herring anywhere from water 100ft to 160ft,the preferred depth was 60 to 80 ft,water temp was 83 on the surface, the storm hit us about 10 miles from the landing so we got out the water just in time

i have to echo this report. me and my bro went out sat morning early. marking fish all over the place in 100' plus all through the channel, few bites. went back at night and more of the same. we missed a couple good ones (1 spit hook - 1 loose knot) ended up with 3 around limit size, only kept one that was foul hooked. none of the boats around us (10 or so) were catching anything either. a couple fish here and there.

the bite really turned on about 12:15 or so,all the boats around us were catching fish, was probably 10 boats in the area, looked like some pretty nice fish being landed, like i said our biggest was over 10lbs but he spit the hook just as i reached for him with the net,i hate we had to leave biting fish, but that storm was packing some horrific lightning,on the way home,we got to about the ridgeway exit cruising along, jeff done nodded off and the worst lightning bolt i ever seen came down and hit some trees about 50 yards off the road,it sounded like a machine gun going off, about 6 real loud pops, and fire spraying everywhere,i darn near had a heart attack at the wheel,i swear my heart skipped a few beats and jeff jumped up outta sleep wondering what the heck had just happened,he thought someone opened fire on us,it was an awesome sight, wish i could have got a pic of that, but i was already way to close for comfort, anyway that bite ought to pick up real good for the next 2 months as the water temps keep rising and the themocline sets in,we will try em again in a few weeks

how deep were you fishin? i think our baits were too shallow. our FF was showing all kinds of fish, but we weren't getting much. the bites we did get were about the time you're talkin.

close lightning is a trip... you should have palyed along with the game on jeff.

"damn jeff, somebody's trying to kill us!" lol

all the fish were caught between 60 and 80 foot deep,1 thing that really helps if you are fishing like that is line counters,i have 4 of em,3 made by shakespeare and 1 bps model, the shakespeare ones are far better than the bps models in my opinion, bps sells both for around 11 or 12 bucks, they are well worth and saves alot of time by counting off the old way, they are pretty accurate too as i have tested and measured line out before, used with the depth finder it takes alot of guessing the depth have your bait, just remember to consider how high your rod holders set from water level if ya wanna be closer, hope this helps

How long after dark does it take for the stripers to come to the lights?? Would my crappie set up of floating lights and mariine batteries last long enough to catch fish??

yea thats what most people use down there,in fact rango and the beast crew just caught 3 limits last weekend at wateree using the starfires, the striper will be there, the lights will draw the bait, the bait will draw the striper, some people use high pressure sodium lights, they work at least as good if not better,in fact just got 2 400 watt fixtures and mounted last week before our trip and they worked great, didint catch but 6,but also got run off the lake by the storm, only thing about HPS lights is you have to runn a generator, and that can get annoying after a while
