Default anyone know of a good outboard mechanic in the upstate preferably near Greenwood

My parents bought a party barge with a 50hp outboard last year and have had nothing but trouble with it. They thought they had a guy who could fix it but its still not running right. Its the original motor that came with the boat as far as I understand and its either a Johnson or Mercury. My dad took it to a guy this weekend but he said that they motor was too old for him to work on it. Its an 80s motor. any references are appreciated. Its hard to squeeze the whole family on the bass boat lol. tried that this weekend and about got a couple of chinhooks.

I had an early 80s model 50hp evinrude fixed at Lees marine in anderson and we haven't had a single problem out of it since. He had enough part motors laying around to fix mine and save me some money.

H and L Marine on HWY 72 between Cornaca and Greenwood. 864-227-0625 is the number to shop, I struggled finding a good boat mechanic after the one we dealt with for years died last year. Found this place this spring after several recommendations and Bennie has done a good job on the 2 different boats he has fix for us, honest, straight forward, and has stuck to his word.

thank you for the responses i will definitely be giving them a call and see what they can do. I did find out it is for sure a Mercury 50hp. The main thing it is doing is that it is hard to start and when is does start you have to immediately run it almost full throttle or it cuts out. the motor will not idle for anything. even when you have it full throttle its not running full strength. they have had the carbs rebuilt new plugs but thats as far as I know to this point.

here is me first question ? has anyone changed the fuel line and primer bulb ??? if not ; change both of them and see if that does not cure the problem !!! if the line has been changed and it is the color grey change it out to a ethanol rate fuel line from a auto parts store like autozone !!! your problem sounds fuel related like the engine is starving for gas !!!! I had the same issue on 1985 Johnson and it had the grey fuel line on it ; hard to start , would not idle right , took along time to get on plan after it did it ran good !!! came home one day said I going to see what's going on long story short it took the grey fuel line off from the primer bulb and the motor took end off and could barely blow thru it !!! looked inside and seen a clear tube obstructing the fuel flow I thought , come to find out the clear tube was the inside of the fuel line breaking down due to ethanol blocking the fuel flow !!! REMOVED all of the grey fuel line REPLACED it with ETHANOL RATED fuel line from autozone and the motor would start first thing , idle like champ and got plane in no time ran strong like it suppose to !!!

Funny thing is that I liked Strmwalker's post the other night because this happened to me last year, I bought a new gas line, replaced the filter and everything was fine until today. It's doing the same thing, it will start briefly then sputter out I just keep trying and eventually it will start. When I took the gas line off last year the inside clear lining was falling apart, I put on a brand new one and thought it would be fine. The problem was it is the same grey stuff and probably bad again!!! I'm going to the auto parts store to get some ethanol tolerant gas line tomorrow. I've been looking at some pictures where everyone is complaining about the Mercury grey lines and how bad it is when it falls apart, one guy had a gas bulb so full of pieces that it wouldn't work.

I use avation gas, 100 octine, no ethanol and the gas has to be stable for a year also. My Yamaha 40, 4 stroke loves it.
