Default Tis' the Season - Murray Report 4/22/18

As with past years, I've been anxious to see what the green carp were doing at the local fishing hole. I consider myself a 1 month a year bass fisherman because I do enjoy the spring topwater bite.

So, yesterday morning I made a last minute decision to see what was happening. I loaded the bass gear and baitcasters and was off to the lake in the cover of darkness. I was afloat and idling to my first stop by 6:30 AM and things started off a little slow. I stayed put at stop #1 and finally a little action started to show. It wasn't long before the first fish of the morning blew the top off my spook and it only got better from there. Nearly ever stop I made had fish blowing bait out of the water and they were more than willing to take my offerings.

I quit at 10 AM with fish still biting. Final tally was 20 bass boated and 5 solid fish taking the ride home. It was one of the better bass fishing trips I've had in a long while. Took a minute to knock the rust off but by the end of the trip I was back in the swing and I'm ready to try them again!

Well done Derek, nice looking bass and I’m certain a blast catching them on top water baits. I too, was a once a month bass fishermen, but have stopped going the last couple of years for some reason. May was always my favorite month, as the fish were still shallow, done spawning, and aggressively feeding. Congrats on the stellar day!

Ain't nothing wrong with going over to the dark side every once in a while, I thinking about hitting them a time or too, myself. But I want to get a couple Santee Kiddy cats also, and I'm tried of fishing for a while. I guess I'll just keep on dreaming and one day I'll get all my stuff I want. Glad you caught a mess, it sure is fun seeing them bust a top water bait, O if only a crappie would hit that way. Keep at them they do eat good too. You sure got a couple of keeper there with you, they are getting big.

Great job Derek. I may try them while I'm ar Santee next week. That used to be all i fished for, especially at the upper end of Santee.
Girls are growing up fast and pretty too. Just wait til they start daing. Your hair will be gray like mine. LOL.

Brought me back a few years...when I was much younger I bass fished a good bit and LOVED the top water bite. Matter of fact I probably wasted ALOT of time trying to get them to bite top water. My go-to's were the hula popper and the jitterbug. Doubt they even make those anymore it s=was so long ago but regardless...it was awesome seeing them knocking those lures slap out of the water.

Sounds like a banner day. Congrats on the catch. Also...you have a lovely family. I know those girls love their Daddy and they have you wrapped right around their little fingers. Congrats on both counts!

Nice catch, I used to fish the ABA and NBC tournament trails along with my local club (Bassmasters of SC) and really enjoyed it. I too love a topwater bite especially on a big ole buzzbait.
You can't catch fish from the couch.
