    Default Longline?

How many of y’all start longlining with many different colors to see what’s best? 8 rods =8 colors
Or just put on what worked last time?
    Thanks

That is typically what i do, i usually have 12 rods out and about 8 different colors then my "go to" colors i will have one tipped with a minnow and one without to see what they prefer on the menu for that day.

Do you have a quick system for changing them out? Takes me a good while to re tie everything (on land)

I usually have a few rods not in use so i will put what is working on them and start replacing one at a time so that i always keep a full amount of rods in the water.

I too like to troll 12 rods. Through experience I have simplified my long lining methods to quickly determine the fishes color desires. I have found that two colored heads seem to be far superior than most others. Those colors are blue, and orange. Likewise, I have found that two colors of jigs will quickly point you in the correct direction as well. These colors are white and chartreuse, and black, blue and chartreuse. I simply alternate color combos on every other rod. I match the dark color with orange head, and the blue head with the light color. This method has worked fantastic for me for three years now, and I feel it will definitely take some of the confusion of color selection out of the equation for newbies.

How do you no what size jig head to start with or does that just come from experience. Also, how do you know when they are up high in the water column in deeper water and don,t see them on your depth finder. Tks

Jig weight is determined by the fishes migration progression. Water 10 feet or less 1/32. I use 1/16 the remainder of the time. If fish are deep and slow to bite I use a double jig rig. If deep and aggressive, I simply add a split shot. As far as where the fish are located in the water column that can be determined via boat speed and length of cast.

New Ford Blue, and Chevy Orange are the two head colors I have settled on,blue heads and bright colors on bright days is hard to beat,Orange heads work very good to with darker bodies.BUT nothing is absolute

I use a few more head colors but for me I think it's more about what I like vrs what the fishes like. HA! I also have some staple colors that seem to ALWAYS work if anything will work for me so those are always scattered on my 14 rods somewhere. mostly those are darker colors so I always scatter some lighter colors in too.

The biggest dilemma for me is am I gonna be pulling shallow or deep?!? Once my mind is made up I'll change out all of my jigs from 1/16ths to 1/32nds (or visa versa) and that is usually done in my backyard. If I get on the water and see the fish want the opposite then I'll just spend the time to re-tie one rod at a time. Sometimes that happens more than once in a day of fishing too. IMO you just gotta do whatever it takes to get a bite. If I see one particular colored curly tail getting hit more than just a couple times and it's the only one like it out there then I'll switch a couple more out to get more like it out. I'll almost NEVER put more than 4 alike out though as I've seen the bite change during the day from one color to another. Just my 2 cents...
