Default Water temp on Clark Hill

Friday afternoon it was 62. This afternoon it was 74. CRAZY weather! Mid-lake. I just rode up today after work to drop the last of my yearly brush piles. We caught a half dozen hybrids in the back of a creek but don't really have a report.

The weather station at Plum Branch shows the water temperature has gone from 56 to 68 in just the last 7 days. All the flowers seem to be trying to bloom at the same time, maybe all the fish will try to spawn at the same time, too.

It is jumping like that on all the upstate lakes I have been on. Making the fishing a little crazy.

Fished the Hill yesterday. Water temps 68 to 75 deg F. Warmer as you go shallower. Kinda warm for mid March, but seen it before. Only fish I could find were VERY shallow. And they were all males. I did get a late start due to flat tire. Very busy on Clarks Hill yesterday too. Looked like weekend traffic.

They are also dropping the lake. I don't know why the corp does this when the fish are spawning, it seems they do this just about every year.

They will come out around April 15th and say they will hold the lake steady for a month to allow fish to spawn. I see it in the paper. But we all know almost all the bass and crappie have already done the deed by then.

Something to remember though....just because the lake made temperature in record time doesn't mean all the fish are "ready" to spawn. Mother Nature still has to get those eggs mature and as with every year that I can remember the fish move in waves towards the banks. With cooler temps over the weekend I believe the same will also happen this year. Atleast I hope so. So far....either I'm cleaning males or females that are still toting their eggs.

Up until a week ago all the dinks were somewhere that I wasnt but now with those warmer water temps you have to weed thru the skidders to catch a mess of good sized keepers. It's good seeing those skidders though...as theyre your slabs for the future years.
