    Default motor question

ok hope someone might be able to help........i have a mercruiser 3.0l i/o that ran great last year but it had water in the oil so i tore it down, replaced head gasket, fixed cracked block, adjusted valves ect... now my problem is it wont run at an idle......it wont start unless the throttle is bout 1/4 open.then it starts and runs great.......gotta go quick from 1/4 in neutral, back to idle then in gear. once its running, it scoots across the lake great.......it has good gas and not running hot........any ideas?

Sounds to me like it might be the carb. After thinking about it when u took the intake off I imagine you left the carb attached. But did you get the llinkage hooked back up where it was originally.

Does sound like trash in the carb. Had this happen on a 9.9, cleaned the carb and rebuilt and runs like a charm. My motor was doing the same as yours, it doesn't take but a tiny piece of thrash.
We have a couple of outboard guys on the site, maybe one will see your question.

Try adjusting your idle screw up a little until it will start and run. Check RPM's. If they are to high start checking for a vacume leak on hoses and base gasket for carb. Also check around your intake manifold gasket. You can do this by spraying some brake keen around intake out of the little tube where it mounts to block. If you have a leak RPM's should go up when it sucks up some of the brakekleen

Fishman247, if you dont find the answer here then be sure to post your problem in the mechanic's corner forum. Good luck with it.
