Default Home from California and back in the Slabbin' Saddle! Clarks Hill Report Feb 19

I'm finally home, thank you Lord!, and today was the first opportunity of 2011 I've had to wet a hook. And I have Barry Dye to thank for my first fish of the year as he called me last night to invite me on trip where all I had to do was show up (well, with a biscuit, of course!:D)

We were among the first to launch at the Hill and it was incredibly foggy. We're talking "100 feet from the ramp, where did it go" foggy. So we stayed close rather than making a run, and while the bite started slowly, it eventually paid off well for us. The fish showed a definite preference for bright colors with John Deere and Fire Tiger working well. The size of the fish started off small, and surprisingly, increased throughout the day. Perhaps the slabs laid low early until the fog burned off and then rose in the water column where our jigs could get their attention.

Here's a pic of a Barry with a nice fish and a livewell shot showing a good start mid-way through the morning:

I had somewhat expected the fishing to slow as the bright sunshine and clear blue skies appeared, but what we experience was consistent fishing with some lull periods through the morning. We left at noon with 34 fish (including some kept to scale and fry on the bone)in the livewell and approximately 45 total boated. It was a fantastic trip and it felt so good to experience crappie chasing once again!

Here are some pics of the end-of-trip livewell just before we pulled out. A wonderful morning of fishing!

That's a box FULL! Congrats on a great morning of fishing. I was beginning to worry having not heard many good reports of the hill at all. I know both you and Barry were anxious to hit the water since there's been quite a dry spell for you guys getting on the water.

I gotta say though...from reading Barry's report...he musta out-caught ya once you began talking with big boy britches on.:D

The best news of all for me....we finished that painting job this morning so I'm back to retirement for awhile.:p

    Butch,

Glad to hear you are rejoining the ranks of the non-working (like us Gov't types ) but take it easy on the slabs this spring. I heard there's not much money set aside for crappie restocking since their state budgets got cut! :D

I definitely decided to let Barry catch a few after he threatened to toss me overboard near one of those fog-shrouded islands! As a matter of fact, I believe he'll confirm that the fish he's holdin' came off on one of my rods, but hey it's better than swimming in that 53 degree water! :D

Checked the gas prices lately?!? Looks like the gov't has alternative plans to keeping retired people sitting at home.

I appreciate the kind words, guys. I must confess that there were fish of all sizes in there. When Barry asked if we should weigh any, I said we should estimate instead. So to give you a perspective of size, I think the smallest crappie was around 14 inches, and the white perch in there, well, I think they were around 4 to 6 lbs each... Doh That's my story and I'm sticking to it! :D
