I think we are talking about a Re-build, Serious repair, or Re-man Replacment power head.
That's based on the Compression issue.

As a mechanic, I did every thing slow and careful. It takes hours. I was flat amazed at that Assembly process.

So, the next thing to consider is the Gearbox, shifting OK, lower unit buggered up? Prop shaft has some play for certain but excess?
Shifting dogs not worn off. It might be beneficial to have the Prop n' Gears pulled to look at that.
If; All that is in good usable shape, just do the power head.
If: that lower unit is showing some wear as the Power head is, replace it all!

How many Hours? Has it been Cooked? Do you know the History? Did this start all at once?
If I were the guy you were bringing it to for help, I'd want to know as much as I could.
Then I'd have my Trouble shooting routine I'd go through.
I'd report what I found and how Much it'd cost if I did the work.

I'd want to make sure I Charged you enough money, and made enough repairs that you would never have to bring that thing back to me.

Go shopping elsewhere for other options. There are some Outboard engine forums online. Check some of those as well.
I just wish I could be better at fishing. Or maybe luckier!:D

Carb kits a inexpensive. You must have some friends or know some one that can rebuild a carb. With a little help and a case of beer you can get that job done for pennys. I would not spend that kind of money while the motor has low compression. Good luck .

Brettw, I have used Boatman44 several times in the past and his work is topnotch.

I said go shopping. Find out from somebody what the problem is before making a decision.

Unequal compression is bad, but low compression can be just as bad.

Go shopping till you find out just why ONE carb is all the Mechanics would say justifies that much money.
Wish I were closer, My curiosity is up to the lips right now.

    I'll keep you guys posted,
    thanks again,
I need to see that compression test done once more for sure.
FYI, Honda has 2.99 % financing on their motors now. I may go silver for that very reason if I have to replace the motor.

    Default 4 strokes

All carb 4 strokes have real small jets, hard to see through with naked eye. Done service work on alot of hondas. honda make a topnotch motor but cant set over 3 to4 weeks without running. If you buy 4 stroke make sure you go efi.. If you use 4 stroke carb engine start them evey couple weeks and keep stabil in gas.. just my take on them... etech in small engine and optimax are better fuel economy than 4 strokes
