    Default Greenwood is gar infested

Well at least in the area I was this morning. A guy who lives in that cove that I was talking to said he has never seen them bust up the banks like they were this morning. There had to be at least 10-12 in about a 100yd area. I tried the rope trick but to no avail. I ended up moving so I could try to actually catch some fish. I stating fishing around 8am and left at noon. I still had a productive day as I caught 15 mostly small bream though with 3 crappie and two largemouth mixed in. I was wondering if anyone knew some interesting ways to catch gar on a rod and reel. Ive heard of the rope trick but I was wondering if other stuff would work short of getting the snagging hooks out.

On a balmy summer late afternoon I've had pretty good luck with the rope lures. As long as ANYTHING else will bite I wont fish for 'em though.

There is a lot of GAR up in the river on Murray too! This is there spawn, but we've been routinely hooking about 3 or 4 a trip. My uncle hooked two that were around the 20 lb mark on a jig!

Believe it or not we used to leave places that had Gar because we thought they had run the crappie out, but now we do just the opposite. If there are Gar, then there are Crappie. That's a good sign to me when I pull up on spot.

I have had them grab my Crank Bait before. When Bass fishing was slow in Fla, I used to play with them with a Rapala I've read on another bd where there good to eat, they claim the meat comes out of the back like tenderloins, I'll take there word for it though.

I cleaned one that we shot bow fishing one time. They are a pain to clean, but you are right about the backstraps coming out. It's almost like a deer.

I chopped his head off with a hatchet, used tin snips to cut him down his back, and then filleted the backstraps out with a good knife. You can cut the backstraps into nuggets and they fry them and they eat pretty good. A little chewy, but it's really white meat. They eat about like fried scallops.....REDNECK SCALLOPS!

CB, when I was young (and dumb) and fresh married I joined the volunteer fire dept. in my area. It was just a bunch of good ole boys known to take a drink or three. One night we BBQed hams for a BBQ to be served the next day. There was to be a fish fry for us workers (and I say that loosely...a few were workers that was dedicated to doing things right and the rest of us were the drinkers:rolleyes::D) The cook loved his hourderves (sp?) so after that first plate of fish were gone we were informed we just ate gar. Well, if it was...then it was good enough!:p And that was as close as I've ever became interested enough to wanting to try and eat any gar.:D

I only hooked one monster gar on Murray at the campground, then it snapped my 15lb line when it was done playing with me. That thing was a beast and had my ugly stick ba$$ rod doubled over, drag screaming.

Here's a good gar fishing site that will have some tips: Gar Fishing - GASSBAG Message Board

Theres a fellow that post on there named garman jack that sells some gar lures. It looks like a big long in-line spinner.
    John 21:3
Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing." They said to him, "We are going with you also." They went out and immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing.

And we act like this Nightstalking thing is new.

For some excitment, read the next verse. A special guest arrived, they filled their coolers and had a fish fry on the beach...in the morning. My kind of people.- Bowfin
