Question Trolling an Umbrella Rig for crappie

I bought a couple small umbrella rigs somewhere about 10 years ago and was going to try to rig them up with jigs and troll for crappie. I found them the other day digging out some Christmas things for the wife and had forgot I even had them.
Has anyone tried the umbrella rigs for crappie???? If so, how did they work out for you and how fast did you have to keep the boat going to make the jigs work right.
Thought about trying to use some Road Runners on them, I think the spinners would help to draw crappie to the jigs.

Thanks for any feedback, it's a little out of the box but so am I :D

    Ronnie,

A friend bought a miniature one for me several years ago. Sad to say I haven't even gotten it wet. If I find it, I'll post a pic. It had four hookless chartreuse curlytails attached to the end of the four arms and a trailing line with a 1/16 oz curlytail coming off the middle. The weight on the center of the rig was a bass style bullet weight.

If I do find it, I'll try it out this spring! But um...remind me when that time rolls around again...

    Default Hey SH

I have used the same style umbrella rigs FOM is talking about. I have caught a few crappie on them. I usually troll them out the back of the boat. You will have to adjust your trolling speed due to the weight of the umbrella rig. I didn't have near the hits on the umbrella rig that I do with the just a single jig, but it still works pretty well. Hope this helps and good luck with it!

My luck...I'd hang a bush or top the first 20 yards I pulled it. There'd go the rig AND the jigs.

That is what I was not sure about. The weight of the rig and pulling it fast to keep the jigs at the right depth will be faster than the crappie wants the jigs.

youd be ok trolling em in open water. stay away from the brushy areas. the last crappiethon tournament me and the wife fished i wanted to try longlining small plugs after a article i read in crappie world on using the small plugs to troll for crappie. I bought a dozen jointed minature rapalas for the big day. they was expensive, about 3-4 bucks each. back in the 80's that was expensive....:D the first run we made after the starting bell we lost the first six in a tree top. we retied the last six and wasnt long before we had all them hung and broke off. my feelings was hurt bad after that loss. I blamed the wife and she was blaming me. we never did resolve that argument. if you gonna use that fancy stuff, keep its use limited to trolling open water. :D

It's amazing at the money we spend to catch crappie when our grand pops only used a cane pole and lite tackle :D:D:D
The bad thing is, I've got it in my head again so I have got to try it now:rolleyes:

Might want to fish that with some 80lb braid so you can get it back, less the jigs! Sounds like a snag machine.:D
    I don't fish because I want to, I fish because I HAVE to !

    Moma tried real hard.
