Glad to see you decided to join us here on CDC. To your question...I've seen gar move into a particular area of the lake I fish where I've been catching the sox out of crappie and have a dull night. My limited experience has been that they dont stay long though. Usually the next trip I make and it's back to catching crappie. For whatever the reason the gar have congregated and I'd suspect it's the food (bait). I dont think the gar will hang around long as I believe they are always on the move. Everything I just said is probably BS but that's my 2 cents about it.:o

BTW, you could invite StumpHunter to go along. He's GOOD at catching those gar.:D:D:D

Welcome aboard I got into the gar on the Hill fishing Little River on the S.C. side. They always seem to be there but when you can catch it when they are not feeding the crappie will keep you busy But I seem to draw in the gar where ever I'm at :D:D

I use to runaway from those gar also, until a couple of years ago a old man in bighart told me to fish below them. Well it has also worked since then, the gar are there for a reason and usually its the bait. Of course you will hook a couple here and there but its worth it to me.

Thanks for your two cents buddy I appreciate it. How long do they hang around though. Cause they were in the same spot two weekends in a row. I was wondering if there was anything you van do to kill some of them off cause there was bout 100 in one area.

55, I wished I could say. I fished a creek this past summer that had gar in it every time I was there. Mind ya, this wasnt a brushpile (although some were in the area), rather a real large cove (creek) in the lake. Difference being I spider rig so I'm moving all around this body of water. Early mornings you'd see gar surfacing. I'd even see 'em swimming thru my lines near the surface while fishing. To avoid the gar I did as D.I. said and fished my hooks below the gar closer to the bottom. Still caught crappie so I know they'll share the same body of water. Unlike some will tell ya, the crappie dont leave when the gar show up. Ocassionally I'd hang a gar, even broke one of my poles on one, but the crappie was still there and I was able to fish that area sucessfully most of the summer. Matter of fact, caught LM bass, stripers, and catfish there too. But every time I went there it was endless schools of shad and they seemed content to be in this area so all species of fish seemed to be in that area feeding off 'em. If the area youre talking about is similar those gar might not be too anxious to leave. All I can suggest is fish deeper, drift around some and see if youre still catching fish. If not you may want to give that area a break and find some fish on different brush.:o
