Honing generally doesn't produce material of that size, that's main bearing material IMO.

I'm sure you're right about the sparkly stuff. But maybe the honing material took out the main bearings, dono. I'd think wrong bearings would not only scar a channel in the center of the bearing, but the whole bearing. IMHO, debris in the earl took out the bearings, and maybe it started off as bearing material debris (from one bad one, which took out the others). It's kinda like what came first, chicken or the egg.
