COG is course over ground, I read that in the manual. I'm assume its the heading of your boat? I'm new in learning on these fancy fish finders. I say its based off your GPS position and could be used in a way point in marking fish?

Course over ground calculated by the GPS relative to the ground. Will vary from a compas heading because compass is giving a reading based on direction boat is facing. COG can be influenced by wind or current pushing boat sideways. On the water best use I can think of is in navigating from one point to another. Understanding the difference could keep you out of trouble.

Center of gravity. Tells you if the boat is level

    Very good guys ...

COG is determined by the unit's GPS function of comparing the present boat GPS position (Lat/Log) with the previous boat GPS position (Lat/Lon) to give direction of travel ...

This is why the Course Projection Line disappears when the boat is stationary ... Because the unit's GPS is not determining that the boat's present GPS position (Lat/Lon) is any different from the boat's previous GPS position (Lat/Lon) ...

COG can help you know which direction your boat is traveling without even without knowing your relative awareness of where you are on the Earth ...

In the above depiction ... The boat is traveling 21° from Due North (North is 0/360°) ...

Just saw this one. Interesting... Oh; by the way, I didn't really understand COG. Until now. Good answers... Thanks Rickie. Terry
