Definitely going to open a can of worms with that question. Many opinions and everybody's setup is going to be a little different but I'm happy with my Lowrance units. This shot was taken with my HDS9 on the bow using an HDI transducer.
As you can see I was in about 7 feet of water and moving slow. You can see the crappie in the stakes showing up as bright white dots. They were tasty. Name: image.jpg

That's one of those personal preference things, like blonds, brunettes or red heads. My advice is figure how much you want to spend, then look at the units with the features you want in that price range. When it comes to screen size bigger really is better.

I like my Lowrance LSS 1&2 xducer running on my HB ...

Oh wait ... I'm the only one who can run that combo ...

So I guess my opinion doesn't count ...

Do plenty of research and buy the unit that you feel would suit your needs best. If you have you're heart set on one brand and somebody talks you into buying another brand, then you may never be happy with it.

You can't really go wrong choosing a brand. Spend your time figuring out screen sizes and features you want. That's where you can make the real mistakes.

    CatFan is dead on !!

I think Lowrance having the best DI was from some years ago, when they had units with dedicated crystals for DI and didn't get the DI image from the SI input. Humminbird brought out the ONIX series just to compete with Lowrance's dedicated DI crystal (IMHO).

My unit is DI only (Elite 5 DSI) and is no longer made. It was superseded by the same head unit, but with 2d imaging added in (Elite HDI series).

This is the best screenshot showing fish that I've taken to date :

Most other screenshots, and even the images on the screen when I'm fishing, will show single fish as simply white dots (much like the larger white dots above the "fish shaped" images in the screenshot above).

Can't say for sure, but I'd think that a larger screen would enhance the potential for getting better fish images. My unit only has a 5" screen, plus it's several years old ... so there's been ample time for competition between the major brands to upgrade the technology.
