... I'm just the opposite of some of you guys !!

I don't have, nor do I miss having the "finger paint" images of 2d sonar ... and the guessing game that goes along with trying to figure out what it is that I'm actually seeing on the screen.

My little 2d HB unit on the console is used for depth only, when idling, running, or launching/trailering the boat. My DSI unit is on the TM, where I am when fishing, and gives me GPS/Chartplotter capabilities while also showing me a "picture like" image of what I'm running over. I have little doubt of what I'm seeing on the screen, so no guessing or "interpretation" is needed.

Sorry, I was off Monday and had to deal with a assembling and testing a new grill and also had a flat tire - which I got on the way to buy the new grill… the good news is the ribs and grilled corn were excellent!

I’m not sure what is going on with this guys. The Depth Offset menu setting should change where the lake bottom is graphed in all three sonar types (2D, Si and Di). I can’t think of any menu setting that could cause this. If the cursor was activated the water depth could change but the displayed sonar wouldn’t but we should also see the cursor on the display (which I don’t). So I guess I’m not help after all!

Good to hear about the ribs and corn...bad on the tire Greg.

To me it's not that big of deal. The thing just puts me on fish time and time again...dont get much better than that. went out today with a friend and this was the result. enough said

Maybe there is a possibility that the Depth Offset setting only affects the "Digital Depth number displayed" and nothing else...whereas the distance from the xducer to the bottom is at 6ft...with a Depth Offset setting of +1.1 would simply display the real distance (6ft) + Depth Offset (1.1ft) for "displayed Depth" of 7.1...

Then maybe the SI is getting it's own depth (range) from it's own beam(s) without the "Depth Offset" being applied to it...of which the distance from the xducer to the bottom is still just 6ft...

I wonder if there's a way we can test this...??

Greg...can you pick the engineer's brains again...??

I can try Rickie but I played with the Depth Offset menu with a 998 unit running in the Simulator mode and it changed the digital depth readout AND the distance the bottom was shown to the surface/zero line in all three sonars (2D, Si and Di).

Now I see what you are talking about. I'll change mine over to default off set and see if the readings change as well.

I need to try this on my 1197 on the water and see what happens also...
