I use the Berkley Power Wigglers in white. They seem to match the waxworms bite for bite and often better. They basically look just like a waxworm but you do not have to worry about them dieing. One of my favorite and most often used baits, along with the Eagle Claw Crappie Bait in natural.
It is not about the equipment you have to use,
It is about how you use the equipment you have. :D
Waxies are my bait of choice for ice fishing for Gills and Crappie. Spikes (maggots) are second. Never used Mealworms for fishin', used to feed them to my salamanders when I was a kid though.
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not sure.
how do you all hook you waxies? thread them on the hook or just run the hook thru the middle and let the ends dangle?
When ice fishing I hook 'em through the head and let the whole thing hang when using a vertical jig. Frequently I use two of them. When using a horizontal jig I thread them a little so they project out from the hook shank.

I generally hook them by threading them on the hook. That's for small regular hooks or small jigs, either one. Reason being .... small gills will snatch them right off a hook, if they're not threaded. I'm using the Wax Worm for smell, more than for action.
Now, if using them in cold water (as in Winter here, or below the ice farther North) ... hooking them thru the end or middle might be a better idea, since the fish are cold blooded & will be slower moving & not need to feed as often, so the extra temptation of a wriggling bait can help.
