    Default Powder Paint First Attempt

I poured some 1/16 & 1/32 oz jigs today in my old jig mold & they turned out OK. I had some #4 Mustad hooks & some Matsuo #4 & #6 sickle hooks which I had never used before. This was also my first time to use the Palmer Hot Pot 2 and it worked well. I DID buy a Lee ladle so that I don't have to try to pour out of the Palmer & that worked really well.

But I had less than perfect success with the Powder Paint, however. Some of them turned out really good and others not so good. I'm going to have to repaint some of them. I was using a candle to heat the jig heads and there was a bit of a breeze blowing into the carport which, I think, resulted in some of the heads not getting hot enough. I held the jigs by the eye with a pair of forceps but some of them still got paint in the eye. I would hold them over a candle for about 10 seconds, then dip them in the paint, then hold them over the candle again & dip them a second time. Then I put them in the toaster oven and let them cook at about 350 for 30 minutes. Taking them out of the forceps resulted in some LLOONNGG strings of paint but they didn't show up in the finished product.

    Questions, Comments, Answers or Statements.

    Thanks

Try only dipping them once and when you are holding them over the heat try it for just a couple of seconds. I have never gone longer than 7 seconds and that was when I was painting a half ounce jig. The little 1/32 should be around 3 to 4 seconds and the 1/16 maybe 5 seconds or so. I think if you try this, you will not have near the strings of paint on your jigs and you will like the results better. Also looking into getting an alcohol burner or Sterno can when you get a chance. Just be super careful with the open flames. Trust me, I get burnt every week. It sucks.

breeze may not have been the problem. Using a candle you may be getting some soot on the head and the powder isn't sticking right, same can happen with a regular bic lighter. Some of the guys use a denatured alcohol lamp, the toaster oven to heat them up and a bunch of us use a cheap heat gun.

Just keep at it and you'll get it down - it just takes practice. We've all been there!!!

Thanks, Guys. Where's a good place to get an inexpensive heat gun? And how much will it run?

    Thanks

Wagner dual temp roughly $22 at Home Depot. In my store they're in the painting section not the tool section.

If you have a Harbor Freight, Tractor supply, Northern Tool or store like that a lot of times you gan get one for 9-10 dollars. Two temp is best, I run mine on low. I get the same strings at times it just takes cleaning the tips of your forceps more often. It's a pain but it is the easiest way for me to do it. Do you have a fluid bed?

Rather you use an alcohol burner like I do, or you use a heat gun like Fatman does. Do not get discouraged. Everyone of us has melted or deformed heads trying to heat them or paint them. It is just part of the game. Never feel bad about asking for advice from any of us either. None of us woke up one day and knew how to do all of this.

Thanks, everyone. We have a Tractor Supply right here in our little rural town. It used to be a textile town, but when all the textile work went overseas, it has just about dried up and blown away. Poverty in this little town is appalling.

But we have, in the past few months, gotten a small Walmart with a grocery store in it and a Tractor Supply. I'll have to see what I can find there.

Uh, Cray, not only do I not have a fluid bed, but I don't have any idea what it is or what to do with it. I don't think you're talking about a water bed! But I don't have one of those either. All I have is a melting pot, a ladle, a mold & a toaster oven that I bought at a yard sale to cook crappie jigs in. Oh, and I have an oven thermometer so I can set the temp on the toaster oven at about 350 F.

How to build a fluid bed for powder coating - YouTube
Several fluid bed videos. Watch some of these. You can build one for little of nothing. I built all mine. It sure makes it a lot easier, uses less paint. I do suggest going to TJ'tackle and order one of his cups that has the membrane for powder already installed. I have tried all the filter papers they show in different videos and his cup works so much better and it's cheap.

OK, Cray. I've watched the video about making the fluid bed and another video about using it to dip the jigs in the powder paint. He doesn't really say in the construction video, but I think you connect the fluid bed to an aquarium air pump. Is that right? And my second question is about the cup from TJ's Tackle. You aren't talking about buying the whole fluid bed from him at about $34.00, but just the cup at about $4.50. Do you use the same cup for all of your different colors of paint or do you use a different cup for each color?

    Thanks

    GF
