    Default Back to the Pond

We had our first rain in over three weeks yesterday and last night .
I was hoping it would be enough to fill the town pond , but it only brought it up about half what was needed.
The weather was overcast with temps in the mid 60’s .
I took two rods , a 5’ St Croix Avid ULF paired with a Shimano Stradic 1000 and a 5’ St Croix Premier ULM paired with a Shimano 500 Sahara .
I started fishing with the Avid and found with a 1/64 Trout Magnet jighead I was able to cast as far as I was with my six foot rods .
After an hour I switched to the Premier and found no difference in casting distance or sensitivity even though the Premier is a moderate action .
I did notice a difference with a fish on . I like the feel of the Premier better. More bend .
I caught nine including a couple of shellcrackers.
Baits today were Bobby garland itty bitty Swim’rs and itty bitty slab hunters .
These were the better ones .

How would you compare the new Avid ultralights versus the previous generation of St. Croix Panfish rods? Are the Avids less noodle-like? I am considering off-loading my 8' Panfish series rod, but like it for inline spinners (and that's about it).

When I bought my 6’ Avid Panfish I really wanted a shorter rod , but 6’ is the shortest they’re making.
But with a 13” grip/handle the rod fishes shorter .
This rod has become my favorite. It’s not as noodlely as other 6’ St Croix ultralight rods .
    Although it’s not what I would call a fast action it’s more of a moderate/fast .
It’s a sensitive rod that I think will be a good all around rod . One that will fish various lures well .
And it has the best feeling grip of any of the previous panfish series.

    Default 10-15-22 Town Pond

I went back to the town pond this morning.
Got there around 10:30 , it was 55 degrees this morning according to my dash temp when i arrived.
It was 10:33 when I caught my first fish , a bluegill around 6”. I was 12:09 when I caught my next one , a small LM .
I think the cool nights have affected the bite until the water warms a little. I ended up catching four gills including one nice one and a good 3# line UL bass . Five of my six fish were caught in the last eleven minutes I fished .
Our coldest weather of this fall is due in here next Tuesday , down into the thirties at night .
Going slow the fishing down I’m afraid.
Equipment used today was a couple of 5’6” Daiwa Ultralights, an Aird X , and an Exceler . A couple of inexpensive but good feeling fast action little rods . With 3# Flouroclear P-Line I was getting nice distance with a Trout Magnet jighead/Bobby garland itty bitty swimmer combo . 50-60’.
I had planned on leaving at noon today , I’m glad I stayed that last twenty minutes and retried my original fishing hole.
