Since it’s a weekend day , Sunday 03-20-22 , the plan was to fish this morning to try to avoid the crowds that usually show up after lunchtime.
Woke up to low forties temps.
Left the house at 11:30 and had decided to give soft plastics a try for awhile.
Fished a Bobby Garland Itty bit on a drop shot for several casts without a nibble , switched to a shortened Slider grub on a 1/32 jighead for another 15-20 minutes without any results .
Switched over to a spider fly on the drop shot and caught my first gill on the third cast.
The gusty wind , along with the geese and turtles made casting and fishing tough . Three times my line got blown onto the bridge and I had to go untangle it .
The geese and turtles were swarming around the area because they were being fed by the walkers . .
By the time I gave up fighting the elements, I’d fished almost an hour and a half , and caught three gills , and had two come unhooked halfway in .
One was a nice one .
Combo was 5’4” SC Panfish , Daiwa Legalis LT 1000 , 2# P-Line .
Looking forward to tomorrow. Less people, and hopefully less wind .

Sure beats the fishing I didn’t do today. I had to work yesterday and it ran long, a ten hour day. I was just worn out and chose to rest. Just as well as I woke up to rain conditions. I’ll chase some next weekend and we can compare notes. Looks like it was a good trip despite the frustrations.

Thanks Bob , yes , even with all of problems I had , it was still good to get out .
One of the highlights of the trip was meeting a family , three children and their mother who were interested in what I was doing . The young man in the family attempted to explain to the others what I was doing .
He said , you put a worm on the hook , you throw it out, when the fish eats the worm , you wind him in.
I told him he was , almost right . I showed them my spider fly and demonstrated in the water how it moved , looking lifelike . The mother was especially interested, saying she never liked to fish because of dealing with slimy worms , but thought she would like to fish my method of fishing . She was impressed when I told her I tied my flies and had developed a way to fish them on spinning gear .
Then they bought some duck food and fed the geese , ducks, turtles and the fish , just like the rest of the folks do . LOL . At least they were nice .
Short , less than two trip just before noon today .
Weather was nice , sunny , a little windy , but not as bad as yesterday.
Didn’t have any luck around the bridge , my usual spot , so I walked around to the other side and parked my folding stool in the corner of the dam , near the overflow .
Caught three crackers of various sizes and a green trout about 10” .
Fun on the 5’ St Croix Triumph ULM . Paired with a Daiwa Legalis 1000S LT with 2# p-line .
Fished a spider fly on a drop shot .
I’d wanted to try the Triumph UL moderate to test whether it was worthy of being in the drop shot fishing rotation.
Although I was able to catch a few fish an fit was fun fighting them on the little rod , it lacks the sensitivity to be a serious drop shot rod .
All three cracker bites , I felt a slight tick , and a feel of weightlessness, like they were running toward me . I was having trouble feeling the drop shot weight.
The wind didn’t help .
I’ll be pulling the reel and it’ll be going onto my replacement 5’4” SC Panfish rod that on order .
Nice looking fish!
